The Chargers are good enough to beat most teams in the NFL but there’s one team they seem to beat every week: themselves. Sunday’s trip to Gillette Stadium ended as many others have before, with a painful loss to the New England Patriots. For the second straight year, the Chargers coughed up the football four times in losing to New England. This time they did it all four times in Patriots territory, adding to the frustration of a 35-21 loss.
Left in the debris of the turnovers and the loss was a Chargers defense which was totally unable to stop the Patriots in their no-huddle attack and saw their safeties exploited by big tight ends over the middle for huge gains and touchdowns. Malcom Floyd made two spectacular catches and then left with a groin injury which could keep him out for a while, testing an already depleted wide receiver corps. And the QB who San Diego fans were hoping was primed for an MVP season has posted the yardage but also four interceptions in two games.
619 Sports has a two-pronged postgame podcast to break down a disappointing loss. First, Craig is joined by NBC 7/39’s Derek Torgeson, who called in from Boston late Sunday night after covering the Chargers-Patriots game in Foxboro and talking to the players and coaches postgame. Then, our Dan McLellan joins Craig for a more in-depth look at the big storylines coming out of the game:
