It was widely reported at the start of July that Bob Melvin would accept a consultant’s position with the San Diego Padres, helping to evaluate minor league talent throughout the farm system. However, Melvin never actually accepted the position, and in the end turned down the opportunity to join the Padres. Vice President of Scouting and Player Development Grady Fuson confirmed to 619 Sports this afternoon that Melvin is not with the organization.
“There was nothing to it,” said Fuson via email, “things just weren’t going to work out schedule-wise between Bob and his family. He had to turn (the position) down.”
At the time of the (apparently presumed) hire, Chris and I speculated that Melvin could be brought into the organization as a future replacement for Bud Black. While I’m sure Melvin’s number is still in Jeff Moorad’s Blackberry, he is not a Padre, and Black has a contract for 2010, reducing the possible stress of Buddy looking over his shoulder at his potential successor.
