Multiple sources have confirmed to 619 Sports that Rusty Filter is leaving the SDSU baseball program. Filter has accepted the job as pitching coach for Stanford University. Rusty was reportedly offered the job a week ago and agonized over the decision before finally choosing to leave the school he had called home as a player and coach for over 22 years.
This will be a departure for Filter, who has been a San Diegan his entire life. After attending Mission Bay High School, Filter played for four years under Jim Dietz at San Diego State, before becoming a junior varsity coach, and then pitching coach for the past 17 years. Rusty also served as the recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach for Tony Gwynn, and has helped develop 19 pitchers who have been drafted into MLB, most notably Stephen Strasburg, the top pick in the 2009 draft.
Stanford has yet to officially release the information on Filter’s hire. Tony Gwynn is in Milwaukee for a Padres telecast and as such has been unavailable for comment. 619 Sports is seeking comment from Filter and will update this post when it does.
