Merriman On The Defensive

Are Shawne Merriman’s outside interests affecting his commitment to the San Diego Chargers?  After practice on Wednesday, Merriman seemed perturbed by the idea and defended his right to have a life outside of football:

(due to NFL rules, Merriman’s audio had to be taken down after 24 hours.  The text of his comments are below)

Shawne Merriman

“Well, I think we cleared this out mostly before the season started.  I was here over 80% of the time this offseason, and you know because I tweeted it.  I tweeted my workouts, videos…it’s a recorded fact I was here over 80% of the offseason.”

“I just find it offensive when people say I should go play football and go home.  Basically, you’re calling me dumb, that I can’t do anything else, I’m not allowed to speak, or I can’t speak?  I’m not a dummy, I know where this (notoriety) is coming from, it’s because I go out there and do my thing on Sundays, period.  If it wasn’t for that, there wouldn’t be anything else.”

“With that being known, I keep (football) my #1 priority and #1 focus.  I don’t think anybody, not one person, can question my work ethic and how much I put into what I do.  When this comes up, this whole “Hollywood” thing, it sucks because no matter what I do, it’s going to be amplified.”

“I know my #1 priority, and that’s these guys in this locker room, and going out and winning ballgames, and everything else is going to take care of itself.  That’s just the way it’s going to be.  If anyone else thinks that I’m a distraction I apologize, but there are certain things I like to do.  This (football) is what I LOVE to do, I love to play football, I love the challenge and the competition of what I do every single day.”

“I don’t just show up on Sundays, and you can ask anyone around (this locker room), I get after it every day, every single day, relentlessly.  I’m not even done with my day yet.”

Shawne, give your head a shake bro, it's not about you! We are all very proud of the road you've traveled to make it in the NFL, and the commitment it takes to go from zero to hereo. But with your accomplishments comes responsibility. The higher you elevate in the public eye, the more you will be watched... like my three children who are seeing all this now (on NFL network, news, twitter, etc.) and asking questions because you were someone they followed. I was hoping that dad didn't have to use one of the Chargers as the teaching topic for making wise choices. I hope you grow up soon.

As long as his personal life remains PRIVATE and doesn't spill over into how the team will be judged, I agree with him. But he has chosen a very public life, so he is on the hook for behaving properly as far as I'm concerned. That also includes the company he elects to keep. I mean, seriously, Tila Tequila? Of all the beautiful woman out there, he has to choose a loose cannon like her? Shame on him.
