The Dillon Baxter show made a live appearance at Point Loma High School Friday Night. But to the dismay of many Pointers fans, the episode was about the stud Mission Bay QB feasting on the Point Loma defense.
In the Western League opener, Baxter and the 9th ranked Mission Bay Buccaneers (6-0; 1-0) overwhelmed the Point Loma Pointers (3-3; 0-1) 49-27.
Whether running it up the gut or tossing quick bubble screens, Baxter was simply unstoppable. He accounted for six of the seven total TDs scored by the Buccaneers and had over 300 all-purpose yards.
Hear from Dillon Baxter, Ray Herring and head coach Willie Matson after the jump:
This shouldn’t have come as a surprise to the Point Loma squad either. Last week against Lincoln, Baxter totaled six touchdowns and 550 total yards to lead his team to a 4th quarter comeback-victory.
But Baxter had it his way again. He ran the ball 22 times for 133 yards and four scores; breaking through tackles and embarrassing defenders along the way. Through the air he totaled 170 yards with 2 touchdowns and only one interception.
“All week we’ve been preparing,” said Baxter after the game. Our wide receivers just had to execute, the O-line had to buckle down because we knew they have a strong front. We just came out and matched their intensity and took it over.”

While the Bucs’ QB was certainly the star of tonight’s show, he had some phenomenal supporting actors. WR/CB Raymond Herring was incredible on both sides of the ball. Baxter found him four times for 130 yards and 2 touchdowns, both 50+ yard receptions. He also had two interceptions and a 90-yard fumble recovery for a TD.

“That’s the thing a lot of people don’t know about our offense,” commented Mission Bay head coach Willie Matson. “We’re multi dimensional; Dillon ads that extra something but we can throw the ball, run the ball, and Dillon doesn’t have to do it all. He has a nice supporting cast.”
Among that supporting cast is a defense that turned over the Point Loma offense seven times.
“I call them our secret weapon,” said Coach Matson. “Our defensive coordinator has the kids flying around to the ball.”

While it was a crushing defeat, it wasn’t total devastation for the Pointer’s during their Homecoming game. Senior RB Zach Gemmill had three touchdown rushes, including a 55-yarder in the second half and six-time NFL Pro Bowler and SDSU alum La’Roi Glover was in attendance to see his #76 retired pre-game.
Point Loma will look to rebound next week against a struggling University City (0-6; 0-1). Dillon Baxter and the rest of the Mission Bay Buccaneers will fight to stay unbeaten when they welcome the Hoover Cardinals (4-2; 0-1).
