With many of the teams in our NCTimes/619 Sports Prep Top-10 facing easy opponents this week, we will turn our focus for the 619 Sports Prep Games of the Week to some key league battles in the Eastern League and the South Bay.
Our feature game will be Lincoln (4-1-1, receiving votes) traveling to St. Augustine (5-1, RV) to face the Saints. Both teams have jumped out 1-0 in the Eastern League, and the Hornets’ upset of Cathedral Catholic last week means that this game could be for the league title. Record-setting receiver Victor Dean of Lincoln has 37 catches for 873 yards and 13 touchdowns already this season, including a four-touchdown half against Mission Bay, while Cal-bound Davon Dunn is one of the fastest players in San Diego Section.
The Saints, fresh off a 38-10 demolition of formerly ranked Scripps Ranch, is looking to break into the Top 10 with another big performance. Junior QB Evan Crower is completing 65% of his passes and has thrown 16 touchdowns against just two interceptions this season. D’andre Crowder, averaging over seven yards a carry, leads the Saints rushing attack with 523 yards and four touchdowns.
After the jump, we preview our second spotlight game, featuring a battle for the top of the South Bay League:
This is only the third season for Olympian Eagles varsity football, but the tiny school from Chula Vista has risen to the top of the South Bay League. After a 46-7 demolition of Castle Park last week, Olympian is now 6-0, and 3-0 in league. They will face the Montgomery Aztecs on Friday night, also 3-0 in the South Bay League (4-3 overall).
Olympian’s run-first offense is led by Alex Cornist (401 yds, 6 TDs) and Ian Autman (368 yds, 6 TDs). Guillermo Flores scored two touchdowns in the Eagles’ win over Castle Park and is emerging as a threat as well. Montgomery will counter with workhorse running back Chris Mathis, who averages 5.8 yards per carry and has 310 yards and two touchdowns on the season.
