If Jed Hoyer is indeed to become the next Padres’ general manager, who is he and what type of GM would he be?  CBS Sports’ baseball insider Scott Miller spent time with Hoyer recently in Anaheim.  He joins Craig to talk about Hoyer’s possible move to San Diego, if Kevin Towers would take Hoyer’s job in Boston, and the possibility of an Adrian Gonzalez trade to the Red Sox:

  • The big problem with the Adrian to Boston scenario is no one is putting any actual players into it. (1) Boston's farm system is down this year. How down is it? Until mid-season Paul McAnulty was their best hitter for power in AAA. They have a very good young pitcher in Casey Kelly whom they would have little interest in trading, because the talent level drops pretty quickly after him. (2) They have another year left on both Mike Lowell and David Ortiz's contracts ($12 million each) and Kevin Youkilis is one the better bargains and players in baseball.

Maybe you could make that argument for after 2010, when both Lowell and Ortiz's contracts are up, but not this year. Also, I don't think the Red Sox are willing, as are most clubs, to part with the type of top prospects the Padres would need.
