A game which has been circled on every San Diego Section high school football fan’s schedule is just days away.  #2 La Costa Canyon (7-0) will visit #5 Escondido (6-0-1) with the Avocado League title on the line.  This rematch of last year’s Division I Championship will be our 619 Sports Prep Game of the Week, with complete coverage on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The other key showdown in the Top 10 this week will pit #7 Ramona (7-0) against #4 Valley Center (7-0).  Both teams, along with #1 Oceanside, are 3-0 in the Valley League.  This is the first of the three head-to-head battles that will determine the league crown.

Here’s this week’s Top 10 (first place votes in parentheses):

  1. Oceanside (17), 7-0
  2. La Costa Canyon (2), 7-0
  3. Eastlake, 5-0-2
  4. Valley Center, 7-0
  5. Escondido, 6-0-1
  6. Cathedral Catholic, 6-1
  7. Ramona, 7-0
  8. Mission Bay, 7-0
  9. Vista, 5-2
  10. Helix, 5-2 and St. Augustine, 6-1 (tie)

Also receiving votes: Santa Fe Christian, Valhalla, Rancho Bernardo, Parker

After the jump, you can see what the 619 Sports ballot looked like for this week:My ballot does not include Helix, which has been badly beaten twice but seeks redemption this week against Valhalla.  Amazingly, last week’s U-T poll had Helix 4th and Cathedral Catholic 8th, even though both teams had one loss and Cathedral had slaughtered Helix on the Highlanders’ home field.  Wake up, guys!  I’m still impressed with QB Jake Reed but the Helix defense is suspect this year.

The 619 Sports Top-10:

  1. Oceanside
  2. La Costa Canyon
  3. Eastlake
  4. Escondido
  5. Cathedral Catholic
  6. Valley Center
  7. Ramona
  8. Mission Bay
  9. St. Augustine
  10. Vista
