Jed Hoyer is heading to his first GM meeting with the San Diego Padres.  Should he pursue a trade of Adrian Gonzalez?  On the heels of Chris’ column detailing why the Padres shouldn’t trade Adrian, Craig has some reasons why they should.  Pick your side of the argument in the comments!

As a Red Sox fan, I can't imagine us dealing Buccholz or Bard. With that said, Casey Kelly and Ryan Westmoreland (compared to Grady Sizemore and our top OF prospect) could be the centerpieces of a potential AG trade. If the Padres were to secure both of those young players, along with other minor leaguers, you guys could be a potential powerhouse in two to three years.

This was posted in the Boston Globe's web site a few days ago and is a good example of why any talk on trading AGon should be seen as what it is, pure speculation.

    http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/ar...

Cafardo, the author, essentially writes a message board post which is attempting to pass itself off as analysis. Most of the two pages on AGon is devoted to describing how great he would look in a Boston uniform, but pretty much ignores how Boston would move either the salaries of Ortiz or Lowell and despite being familiar with the Boston system doesn't put forth anyone for whom the Padres would get in return.

While no one disagrees AGon would help the Red Sox how they would move either one of those two salaries and the type of package that it would take for the Padres to do such a deal are the two overwhelming questions.

Its fun and interesting to write and speculate about trades, but deals in todays MLB are principally about prospects and money; and unless any article is willing to focus on those two subjects it merits no deeper thought than two guys talking about their fantasy teams.

Now if you will excuse me, I need to finish my article on how the Padres are going to get Albert Pujols to replace AGon once this trade goes down as Mr. Cafardo has pointed out....

As always, my question is since you guys seem to believe that he is locked and going to Boston is who are they going to get back from Boston? Its not a deep farm system and how much they struggled with pitching last year its doubtfull they would give up Clay Buchholz or Casey Kelley their top prospect.

Its a much different scenario than what they were experiencing with Jake Peavy. You have a much better argument talking about they could trade him to Boston next year, when contracts like Mike Lowell and David Ortiz come off of their books
  • If AG actually hates Petco that much I suppose it's a pipe-dream to believe he would play for peanuts in his hometown. If it's inevitable, then do it now. I hope we get a king's ransom.
