Derby Dolls Open On The Right Foot

by Kali Katt on January 30, 2010

SD's SPlint Her stuck in AZ packDEL MAR–In their season opener the San Diego Derby Dolls took a solid win from Arizona Roller Derby with a final score of 133-78 last Saturday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.  Though the score ping ponged between the two teams for the first few jams, it was SDDD who eventually gained a solid lead over AZRD and defended it to the end.

In this game SD debuted the Wild Corps, a combination of their flat track all-star travel team (the Wildfires) and their flat track local B team (the Hard Corps). AZ sent out the Bruisers, typically one of their local teams, although they share half their roster with the AZ all-star travel team, the Tent City Terrors.

To start off the game SD’s Kung Pow Tina grabbed 5 points to AZ’s Rayna Rage’s 0, giving SD the lead right off the bat.  By the third jam AZ’s Deez Nuts and Gratuitous Violet had scored 10 points gaining the lead for AZ with a 10-8 score. SD’s Kung Pow Tina was back on the line for the Wild Corps, though, and her 9-0 run in the fourth jam got the lead back for SD with a 17-10 score.

Gratuitous Violet came in for AZ and had a 2-0 run in the sixth jam leaving the score 17-12 SD.  That was the last time AZ was within striking distance of SD. SD’s blockers held AZ’s jammers from scoring for the next 6 jams.  Even though AZ’s Deez Nuts had a 13 point scoring jam towards the end of the first half, by the half SD’s lead had climbed to 65-30.

In the beginning of the second half AZ began to pick up some offense, bringing the score to 78-50 SD by the sixth jam, leaving AZ only 28 points in the rear. SD’s defense kicked in and they stopped AZ from scoring for 6 consecutive jams again, just as they had in the first half.  AZ did score 48 points during the second half compared to the 30 points they scored during the first, but it was too late to close the yawning gap, and SDDD triumphed by 55.

AZ’s Messy Missy admitted “It was a lot of fun but it was a tough game.  SD is a really great team with great walls that were really tough to break up; breaking up those walls was probably the biggest challenge for us out there.”

The score is an improvement for AZ over last year’s game where SD triumphed by 123.  That game was played in Arizona and SD’s Wildfires took a landslide win from AZ’s Tent City Terrors with a score of 185-62.
