The Padres made a flurry of roster moves prior to their series opener against Oakland on Friday night. Cliff Floyd’s short tenure as a Padre is likely over, as the veteran outfielder is headed to the 60-day disabled list with a torn labrum in his shoulder. While Floyd ponders surgery or hanging up his cleats, a new big league career is born. 22-year-old outfielder/1B Kyle Blanks has been called up from AAA Portland. In addition, the Padres placed starting pitcher Chris Young (strained right shoulder) and catcher Nick Hundley (left wrist bruise) on the 15-day disabled list, and recalled starting pitcher Wade LeBlanc and catcher Eliezer Alfonzo from Portland. Lastly, Rule V shortstop Everth Cabrera was activated from the 60-day DL, with shortstop/impromptu reliever Josh Wilson sent to Seattle through waivers.
Has the youth movement begun? 619 Sports’ Craig Elsten caught up with Padres’ GM Kevin Towers on the field prior to Friday’s A’s/Padres game, an interview for KOGO.com and 619 Sports:
