With a record-breaking streak of excellence, Mat Latos has thrust his name into the National League Cy Young award discussion while keeping the Padres in the NL West lead. Latos worked seven more brilliant innings on Tuesday night, allowing just four hits and a run while striking out 10, as the Padres edged Los Angeles 2-1 for their second straight win.
Latos has now pitched 15 consecutive starts of five innings or more while allowing two runs or less each time. It’s an MLB record, besting Mike Scott in his amazing 1986 campaign, along with Greg Maddux during the best run of his Hall of Fame career. Nice company.
The Padres scratched for their 11th win of the season scoring two runs or less. Aaron Cunningham and Adrian Gonzalez had the RBI for San Diego, while Heath Bell picked up his 39th save with a five-out performance.
After the game, 619Sports.Net’s Ernie Martinez roamed the clubhouse to return this postgame video. Hear from Mat Latos, Aaron Cunningham, and Heath Bell reacting to Trevor Hoffman’s 600th save:
