The Answer Man Knows — Well, Very Little

The Guy In This Movie Poster Knows No More Than I Do About Aztec Hoops

The Guy In This Movie Poster Knows No More Than I Do About Aztec Hoops

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Seriously, if I had the answers, I’d own this place rather than just visiting it.

But you want to know what’s going to happen with the SDSU men’s and women’s basketball teams here this week in the Mountain West Conference tournament, so I’ll go ahead and give it my best shot.

Let’s start with Beth Burns’ Jekyll-and-Hyde women’s team. Just the fact that I refer to them as such should give you the idea — that I have no idea. And frankly neither does anybody who has been around this team all season (as I have). When they’re good, they’re very good, as they were a couple of weeks ago in an 84-61 demolition of conference champion TCU.

Too often this season, however, the Aztec gals have brought less than their best to the floor. The result was a disjointed 18-10 regular season and a disappointing No. 3-seed in the conference tournament. Preseason favorites coming off their second-round appearance in the NCAA Tournament a year ago (with four starters returning), they’re left with the difficult task of winning three games in four days here in order to return to the Big Dance. Will they? Answer below (because I need more time to think about it).

On the men’s side, you can go a couple of different ways as well. Either the young, precocious Aztecs display their array of talents for three consecutive days and win the whole thing, or….they do just enough to give their long-suffering fans a sniff of hope before falling just short of being included in March Madness.

Until further notice, it’s almost impossible not to expect the latter. After all, isn’t coming up just inches short pretty much the definition of being an Aztec? Under Steve Fisher, SDSU men’s basketball has been good (real good if you compare with the pre-Fisher years), but never great. They snuck into a couple of NCAA Tourneys but were bounced immediately both times (once by Indiana in a game, frankly, they should have won).

For the most part, however, the Aztecs have been a perfect fit for the NIT. Win 20 games. Win a couple of nice conference games at home. Never, ever get a key non-conference win. Never, ever snag that one conference road win that could put them over the hump. Do just enough in the MWC Continue Reading →

Anybody Want To Go Dancing?

Post image for Anybody Want To Go Dancing?

by Chris Ello on March 7, 2010

Their dancing shoes are on. Now the question is whether or not the SDSU men’s and women’s basketball teams can earn themselves a spot out on the floor.

Finishing their regular seasons in style on Saturday, the Aztec men eased past Air Force in Colorado Springs, 61-42, as Kawhi Leonard (right) and Malcolm Thomas each scored 18 points. Beth Burns’ women’s team blew out Air Force, 87-52, at Viejas Arena with outgoing stars Quenese Davis (23 pts.) and Jene Morris (17 pts.) both frolicking after their Senior Day celebrations.

Now the question is whether or not either team (or both) can reach the main stage for March Madness, the NCAA Tournament.

Steve Fisher’s men’s team figures to have the better opportunity, though the Aztecs came within two points of winning the MWC Postseason Tournament last season and were snubbed despite having the nation’s highest RPI among non-qualifying tournament teams.

SDSU’s win over Air Force, a wire-to-wire effort, gave the Aztecs six wins in their final seven games, good enough for a 22-8 regular-season finish and an 11-5 mark in the conference, Continue Reading →

A win at 13th-ranked BYU on Wednesday night might have punched a ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the SDSU men’s basketball team. But, led by Jimmer Fredette (above, 26 pts.), the Cougars kept the Aztecs squarely on the March Madness bubble, 82-68… Meanwhile, at Viejas Arena, the SDSU women knocked BYU out of the MWC lead, 73-71.

Filling the shoes of the great Stephen Strasburg won’t be easy for anybody — even Aztecs All-American pitcher Addison Reed. Making his first career start, after being the nation’s top closer a year ago, Reed allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings as SDSU lost its 2010 college baseball opener to No. 22-ranked Oklahoma, 7-4, Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

While it shoots for a berth in the NCAA Tournament, the SDSU men’s basketball team proved — for one big night, at least — that it can shoot. Hitting on 61-percent from the floor, the Aztecs blew out TCU, 68-51, in Fort Worth Tuesday night. Not to be outdone, the SDSU women rolled to their most impressive victory of the season, 84-61, over the 23rd-ranked Lady Frogs at Viejas Arena.

They finished 13-4 and won their fourth-consecutive AFC Western Division championship. But is there any possible way to remember the Chargers’ 2009 season without thinking solely of the devastating playoff loss to the New York Jets? Well…yes…and no.
