Pure Joy Is Chula Vista Celebrating After Conlin Scores The Game-Winner (AP photo)

You don’t often win a baseball game despite allowing a nine-run inning. But then again, you don’t often see the opposing second baseman high-five the guy who just hit a dramatic, late-inning, game-tying two-run homer, either.

Such is the grit, guts and determination of Chula Vista’s Park View Little League baseball team, which is now just two wins away from the World Series championship in South Williamsport, Pa. More importantly, such is also the purity and sportsmanship of the game of baseball played its most basic level.

Thanks to a stirring rally from five runs down over the final three innings, the Chula Vista kids beat the 2007 Little League champs from Warner-Robins Georgia, 11-10, Thursday night and will meet San Antonio (Tex.) for the U.S. title on Saturday (noon, PST).

So what to take from this thrilling evening?

How about we start with something none of us have probably ever seen before? Something you could never see on a big league diamond. Not Continue Reading →

Peaved! An Era Comes To An End

by Chris Ello on August 1, 2009

Do you remember where you were the last time the San Diego Padres played a significant baseball game?

From His First Start, Peavy Was Something Special

From The Moment Of His First Start, Peavy Was Special

I know where Jake Peavy was — right there on the mound with the ball in his hand. It was Oct. 1, 2007 (only 22 months ago, though now it seems like at least five years), and the Padres were playing the Colorado Rockies in a one-game playoff to determine the National League’s final postseason participant.

Peavy didn’t have his best stuff that night. He departed in the 7th-inning with his side trailing, 6-5, but at least he hung in there long enough to give his team a chance to win.

The same can not be said about his departure this time.

Think about what the Friars were before Jake Peavy arrived on the scene. Padres? Hardly. They weren’t even good enough to be considered altar boys.

So, well on their way to a fourth-consecutive losing season and the franchise’s 14th last-place finish in 34 years of existence, the Padres Continue Reading →

Another Long Day At Petco Park

June 8, 2009

ShareMy Sunday evening was planned out perfectly. Having watched all I needed to of the Padres game (they were losing to Arizona 6-1 in the 8th), I went to the gym and set the DVR to start taping the NBA Finals. I would get home, walk the pug, and then watch the game skimming through [...]

Bad Day All The Way Around

May 16, 2009

ShareOGDEN, Utah — Two good seasons. One bad day. Now the question: what’s next for San Diego State’s baseball and softball teams? On the baseball diamond, in Ogden, Utah, SDSU — which has been carried all season by pitching and defense — neither pitched nor played defense in a 15-5 loss to Utah. The Aztecs [...]

Magical Strasburg Moment: No-Hits Air Force

May 9, 2009

ShareOn Oct. 7, 2001, over 60,000 fans packed into Qualcomm Stadium for an otherwise meaningless baseball game between the Padres and Colorado Rockies. The fans were there to see only one thing: to see if Tony Gwynn — Mr. Padre — could deliver just one more hit. He had already delivered 3,141 of them in his glorious [...]

Tritons Cherry-Pick Win Over CSUDH

May 8, 2009

SharePALM SPRINGS, CA–It’s not often, on a 103-degree day without a cloud in the sky, that you see a baseball game delayed, but that’s what happened here Thursday at Palm Springs Stadium.  A pair of cherry-picker cranes that were in center field (presumably, to hang or drop an advertising banner) broke down prior to the [...]

Draft Day: Pre-Draft Dreams

April 25, 2009

ShareI will be interacting with the NFL Draft today in the way that I like the very most: after the fact.  With Ello and I working the SDSU baseball game, I will be blissfully unaware of Mel Kiper’s breathless comments, or Todd McShay’s analysis, or what the other 29 talking heads on the 5 different [...]

Strasburg, Aztecs Send Them Home Happy

April 25, 2009

ShareIn front of 3,072, the largest crowd ever to see a college baseball game at Tony Gwynn Stadium, the San Diego State Aztecs made sure to leave the onlookers with something to remember.  Striking out 19 TCU batters as a staff, including 14 from record-setting starter Stephen Strasburg, SDSU held off the Horned Frogs 4-3 [...]

Connect / Disconnect

April 6, 2009

ShareToday’s SDSU/Padres doubleheader at Petco can be seen with a ticket ranging from $16-$36. If you’re going to stay for both games, I guess $16 isn’t bad. But I’ve never felt that baseball was a game you could charge a high price to attend. It’s just way too random.
I remember vividly the last time I [...]

A Reason To Go To Petco Park

April 6, 2009

I guess the easiest line of the week would be: “You better go see Stephen Strasburg pitch at Petco Park on Friday, because he’ll be the best pitcher you see there all season!”……
