She’s The Best In Town

Chances are real good that one of the first things Beth Burns will do to celebrate her 300th-career coaching victory is to set her alarm clock for a couple of hours before she really needs to get up, and she’ll go for a run.

Probably six or seven miles. She’s more reliable than the post office. You know the old story about how not rain, nor sleet, nor snow will stop them? I’ve seen the great Aztecs women’s basketball coach run in the snow in Laramie, Wyoming. In the dark. Gotta make sure she gets that run in even if the bus to the airport is leaving at 5 a.m.

She’s built that way. Certain things must be done in life. Just the way certain things must be done to win basketball games. Heading into tonight’s Aztec game at Viejas Arena against UNLV at 7 p.m., Beth Burns has won 299 of them.

She figures to reach the 300 milestone this evening as her preseason Mountain West Conference favorites go for their 12th-straight conference win at home against a Lady Rebels team that has lost its first two MWC games and sits at just 7-9 for the season.

Oops. Don’t mention to her that No. 300 is a sure thing. One of the things that must be done in order to win basketball games is to never-ever take anything for granted.

“You work hard, and you prepare,” she says. “Then you have a good chance to have good things happen.”

It’s not too far-fetched to say that hiring Beth Burns was one of the best things that has ever happened to San Diego State. First time the Aztecs did that was back in 1989. It wasn’t like she was taking over a powerhouse.

After the jump, listen to Aztecs Coach Beth Burns talk about the prospects of her current team, a team that has won six straight games and sits at 10-4 overall, 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference.

SDSU Women’s Hoops: A Team To See

Post image for SDSU Women’s Hoops: A Team To See

Being as you San Diego State sports fans say you don’t go to games because the product has been poor over the last decade or two, what’s going to be your excuse to not attend the Aztecs’ women’s basketball games this season?

Inconvenienced? Sorry, that won’t work since SDSU plays its games on campus at Viejas Arena, where by the way, it went undefeated last season. Cost? Please. You can take the whole family to a game — and probably grab a couple of hot dogs and a coke — for under $25-dollars.

Don’t really like women’s basketball? Well, just remember that it was the great John Wooden who said that the women are the only ones who actually still play the game the way it was intended to be played. And under Beth Burns, widely regarded as the finest coach anywhere in the city in any sport, you can be assured that her team does play the right way, along with playing as hard for 40 full minutes as any team you’ll see.

There’s no star power. Really? The Aztecs feature senior guard Jene Morris, who just so happens to be on the NCAA’s Preseason All-American team and has been named the Preseason Player of the Year in the Mountain West Conference. Alongside her is point guard Quenese Davis, who in just three seasons, is already far and away SDSU’s all-time assists leader. And underneath is junior center Paris Johnson, who was a two-time CIF Section Player of the Year while she was at San Diego High School.

The Other Other Team In Town

February 15, 2009

Share My first sports radio job of any sort was one I created myself, calling UCSD basketball games on student radio station KSDT.  For five years I followed the Tritons through their highs and lows, including a pair of D-III tourney appearances, before eventually (my parents would say, FINALLY) graduating and moving on to other [...]
