After capturing the Mountain West Conference tournament in dramatic fashion over UNLV, the San Diego State Aztecs had nothing to sweat about during Selection Sunday. The only questions were: seeding, location, and opponent.
The answers: #11, Providence, Rhode Island, and Tennessee.
It’s not a fan-friendly trip for Aztecs supporters, but the Volunteers present a challenging but beatable opponent.
After learning their fate, members of the SDSU basketball team met with the media to talk about their amazing tournament championship, and the quest to pick up the Aztecs’ first win in the NCAAs.
Aztecs’ point guard D.J. Gay joined 619 Sports’ Craig Elsten to discuss his clutch, ironman performance in Las Vegas:
MWC Freshman of the Year Kawhi Leonard spoke to 619 Sports about his growth curve, and fulfilling the dream of reaching the Big Dance:
Over three seasons together in SDSU’s back court, seniors Quenese Davis and Jene Morris (right) have helped transform the Aztec women’s basketball team from bottom-of-the-barrel losers into conference champions.
Davis, who will graduate as the school’s all-time leader in assists, and Morris, the school’s No. 5 all-time scorer and all-time Mountain West Conference leader in steals, helped carry SDSU to a share of the MWC title and the second-round of the NCAA Tournament last season — with Morris scoring a career-high 35 points in a first-round victory over De Paul.
The Aztecs (17-10) have struggled at times this season to recapture last season’s magic, but led by their dynamic duo, still have a shot to run the table in next week’s MWC Postseason Tournament.
Before that, however, the pair of stars — who both came to SDSU from the Bay Area – sat down with 619Sports.net on the eve of their final regular season home game, Saturday afternoon (Viejas Arena, 2 p.m.) against Air Force.
A win at 13th-ranked BYU on Wednesday night might have punched a ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the SDSU men’s basketball team. But, led by Jimmer Fredette (above, 26 pts.), the Cougars kept the Aztecs squarely on the March Madness bubble, 82-68… Meanwhile, at Viejas Arena, the SDSU women knocked BYU out of the MWC lead, 73-71.
ShareSALT LAKE CITY, Utah — If anything ever seemed like it was a sure thing, that was it. The San Diego State women’s basketball team, with four starters returning from last year’s 24-8 squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and the solid preseason favorites to win this year’s Mountain West Conference [...]
While it shoots for a berth in the NCAA Tournament, the SDSU men’s basketball team proved — for one big night, at least — that it can shoot. Hitting on 61-percent from the floor, the Aztecs blew out TCU, 68-51, in Fort Worth Tuesday night. Not to be outdone, the SDSU women rolled to their most impressive victory of the season, 84-61, over the 23rd-ranked Lady Frogs at Viejas Arena.
Swept by SDSU’s men’s and women’s teams to open MWC play last month, the New Mexico Lobos bit back on Saturday. Darington Hobson (above) hit two free throws with 2.7 left to beat SDSU’s men in OT, 88-86. The women had their 14-game MWC home win streak snapped, 65-58.
ShareLA JOLLA–Behind an inspired effort underneath from sophomore center Christian Hatch, the UCSD men’s basketball team snapped their five-game losing streak, holding off Cal State L.A. 83-77 Saturday night at RIMAC Arena. The victory capped a double-header sweep for the Tritons, as the 8th ranked women’s team earlier dispatched the Golden Eagles 75-43, extending their [...]
ShareCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Good basketball teams all have star players. Championship basketball teams all have something more important. Call them under-appreciated. Call them unsung. Or even the dreaded “role players.”
Just make sure that when you call them, they’re there.
The San Diego State women’s basketball team has a couple of very good ones, whatever you [...]
