Tritons Trounce Wayward Pioneers

LA JOLLA–Cal State East Bay is struggling through its first season in the ultra-competitive CCAA.  The Pioneers’ appearance at RIMAC Arena on Tuesday night couldn’t have come at a better time for a hungry UCSD team.

Keeping their hopes alive for a berth in the conference championship tournament, the UC San Diego men’s basketball team rode the early hot hand of senior Tyler Acevedo to control the Cal State East Bay Pioneers from start to finish, winning 67-48 in front of a crowd of 379.

Acevedo hit four three-pointers in the first ten minutes of the game on route to a season-high 19 point performance.  His outburst helped UCSD (7-14, 6-12 CCAA) overcome a rare off night by senior star Jordan Lawley, who was held to 9 points on 3-10 shooting.

“Jordan can’t be perfect every night,” said Acevedo after the game, “I decided to come out and let it fly tonight.”

SDSU-BYU Preview With Tom Hart

Post image for SDSU-BYU Preview With Tom Hart

by Craig on February 4, 2010

CBS College Sports’ Tom Hart will be courtside with Steve Lappas for the call as #11 BYU (25-3, 10-2 MWC) puts its 20-game home winning streak on the line against San Diego State (20-7, 9-4) at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.

TomHartTom joined 619 Sports for a game preview interview from the morning shootaround.  Who can stop Jimmer Fredette?  Will the BYU zone throttle the Aztecs’ offense, or lead to an offensive rebounding bonanza?  And is this an elimination game for SDSU when it comes to an at-large berth?  Tom is a Top 25 voter and gives us the answers:

Steve Fisher’s Aztecs are 9-3, and after winning on the road at Drake, 76-73, in overtime Tuesday night, have won six of their last seven games. But have they done enough during their non-conference season to put themselves in position for an at-large NCAA Tournament berth come March?

Lavigne Settles Down, Aztecs Smack UNLV

May 20, 2009

FORT WORTH, TX—For the first four innings of Tuesday’s Mountain West Conference Tournament opener, the San Diego State Aztecs played like a tight team worried about losing.  In the last 4 1/2 innings, they played like a team aiming for a tournament championship and an NCAA Regional berth.  Tyler Lavigne recovered from a jittery start [...]

MWC Tournament Preview

May 19, 2009

Share“Aztecs Are In It To Win It”Fort Worth, Tex. — For now, the focus for Tony Gwynn’s San Diego State baseball team is the five rivals they must defeat here beginning today in the 2009 Mountain West Conference postseason baseball tournament.
But in the back (or, actually the front) of Gwynn’s mind is only this: will [...]

Heal or Reel?

April 27, 2009

ShareIt shouldn’t come as a suprise that the Aztecs’ baseball team dropped out of Baseball America’s Top 25 today. After dropping 3 of 4 two weeks ago, SDSU only fell from #15 to #19, but I knew one more subpar week would knock them out completely.  Sure enough, dropping back-to-back weekend series to conference rivals [...]

Share…1 out of 3 ain’t bad???
My heart breaks for the men’s basketball team at SDSU.  A 52-50 loss to Utah saw the Aztecs at their best and worst, all at once.  At their best, defending and rebounding ferociously, throttling a good team and holding them to 52 points.  At their worst, going minutes without a [...]
