LA JOLLA–Cal State East Bay is struggling through its first season in the ultra-competitive CCAA. The Pioneers’ appearance at RIMAC Arena on Tuesday night couldn’t have come at a better time for a hungry UCSD team.
Keeping their hopes alive for a berth in the conference championship tournament, the UC San Diego men’s basketball team rode the early hot hand of senior Tyler Acevedo to control the Cal State East Bay Pioneers from start to finish, winning 67-48 in front of a crowd of 379.
Acevedo hit four three-pointers in the first ten minutes of the game on route to a season-high 19 point performance. His outburst helped UCSD (7-14, 6-12 CCAA) overcome a rare off night by senior star Jordan Lawley, who was held to 9 points on 3-10 shooting.
“Jordan can’t be perfect every night,” said Acevedo after the game, “I decided to come out and let it fly tonight.”
