San Diego State went into Wednesday night’s matchup with Wyoming looking to avenge a stunning early-season loss on the road at the Cowboys’ Arena-Auditorium.
They got what they were looking for in the form of an 88-57 beat-down behind a monster game from Kawhi Leonard.
The freshman standout scored a career-high 26 points to go with 8 rebounds as the Aztecs (17-7, 6-4 MWC) recovered from a slow start to control the game. Leonard described his mindset coming into the game, and how his teammates helped him achieve his career high.
Wyoming (9-15, 2-8 MWC) opened the game playing active defense and pushing the ball off of early Aztec turnovers. Hot Cowboys shooting and pressure on the ball set the early tone. SDSU trailed 25-19 before its athletic prowess took over.
But the Aztecs tied the game at 27 on a fast break that started with a Billy White (10 points, 3 rebounds) block and ended with a White dunk. They never looked back, taking an eight-point lead to the half. Aztecs Head Coach Steve Fisher talked about this being one of the more complete games his team has played so far this season.

Senior point guard Quenese Davis of the San Diego State Aztecs doesn’t say a whole lot. Her play speaks volumes.
Earlier this week she became the second Aztec women’s basketball player this season to reach the 1,000-point scoring plateau for her career, joining her more heralded running mate at guard, pre-season All-American candidate senior Jene Morris.
Friday night, in a non-conference game against Long Beach State, Davis had the headlines all to herself, scoring 22 points, grabbing eight rebounds and scoring the go-ahead basket with 39 seconds left as SDSU beat the 49ers, 67-62, at Viejas Arena.
With the score tied at 62-62, Davis drove the crowded lane and scored on a six-foot runner, the ball rolling around the rim and then finally in to provide the winning margin. With six seconds to play, she combined with her younger sister Coco on a double-team trap near the SDSU hoop to force a traveling violation on Long Beach’s Karina Figueroa — then hit two free throws at the other end to put the game away.
“This was a really, really big win for us,” said Aztecs coach Beth Burns, whose preseason Mountain West Conference favorites had lost four of their previous five games. “We’ve been working really hard to fight our way out of this slump, and we fought very hard (Friday night) to get back into the win column.”
The Aztecs (5-4) wouldn’t have gotten there without Davis, the 5-foot-10 floor leader from Sacramento, who was Burns’ first big-time recruit three Continue Reading →
ShareVincent Jackson has always had a lot of little boy in him. The problem is that he hasn’t always had enough grown man.
Ever polite, friendly and outgoing — but immature to a fault — the Chargers young wide receiver spent his first four seasons in the NFL playing around and making a lot of silly [...]
ShareIt’ll never make it into Bartlett’s, but here’s a Norv Turner quote from earlier this week that we must examine more closely:
“After two games…I don’t think right now we’re as good as you that cover us think or expect to us to be.”
Since I’m one of those who cover you, Norv…let me first apologize for expecting [...]
Brian Matusz helped lead the Toreros to back-to-back regional appearances before being selected as the 4th overall pick in the 2008 draft by Baltimore. In this 619 Sports interview, Baseball America and MadFriars.com reporter John Conniff gives us his scouting report on Matusz after watching him recently in person. How close is Matusz to major-league ready?
Share I was at the baseball game at Tony Gwynn Stadium between Kansas and SDSU. This two game series is one of those quiet, unnoticed but truly important moments in the Aztecs’ season. The Mountain West (as we saw in hoops) has its identity issues in every sport, but in baseball the conference is seen as [...]
