In uncharacteristic fashion, the Aztecs were led by the long ball in a 68-55 victory over the Colorado State Rams Wednesday night at Viejas Arena on Senior Night.
It was a game in which the Aztecs never trailed, yet never managed to put away until the final moments. DJ Gay led the three-point assault for the Aztecs. He finished the game with 16 points, including four three-pointers, and played shut down defense on the star freshman guard for the Rams, Dorian Green.
The Aztecs completed a 14-1 home schedule, their only loss coming to #14 BYU.
“He wants to guard the best player on the perimeter of the other team and he never gets tired,” SDSU head coach Steve Fisher said after the game. “We took him out for one minute tonight and he played 40 minutes at BYU.”
The San Diego State (21-8; 10-5 MWC) game plan early on was seemingly simple, and obvious to the Rams: score the ball from the paint by taking advantage of their athletic ability.
