Stephen Strasburg and Addison Reed were named first-team All-Americans yesterday, and Strasburg picked up Collegiate Baseball National Player Of The Year, his first of many such honors. Both are well deserving, and have been rewarded for their remarkably consistent performance. They have been constants for the Aztecs all season…but SDSU’s fate is more often determined by their variables. Players who have gone up and down this season, and watched the fate of the team ride with them.
So with apologies to the obvious choices of Strasburg and Reed, here are the three position players and pitchers who could help influence the Aztecs’ regional ride the most, the X-Factors who need to be positive variables for the Aztecs’ equation to compute:

1) Cory Vaughn.
The sophomore outfielder’s breakout season (.329 BA, 10 HR, 51 RBI, 15 SB) has included some of the most dramatic moments of the year. He has launched homers out of extreme pitchers’ parks in college baseball (Blair Field), hit walkoff homers against All-American closers (USD), and launched two line-drive shots over the wall on national TV (LBSU).
