UCSD Women Rising, Men Falling

LA JOLLA–The UCSD women’s and men’s basketball teams continued doggedly on their paths last night, heading in opposite directions.  The 8th ranked women’s team smoothly dispatched Cal State Dominguez Hills 83-57, running their win streak to four and their record to 18-1 (13-1 CCAA), while the men’s team (4-13, 3-11 CCAA) fell apart in the first half before rallying to make their fifth straight loss look more respectable, ultimately falling to CSUDH 68-58 at RIMAC Arena.

Charity Elliott’s women’s team is displaying a level of depth and athleticism that may be unrivaled on the West Coast in Division II.  Last night, the Tritons had all 13 players get at least eight minutes of playing time, with 12 scoring.  UCSD took control of the game midway through the first half with the second unit on the floor and all five starters resting.

“Our bench came in and really made a difference for us,” said Elliott of a unit that scored a season-high 42 points, “picked up where we started and kept it going.  We never had any letdown, which was a big step for this team.”

Daisy Feder (pictured) came off the bench for a career-high 19 points, including four three pointers.  Chelsea Carlisle, played just 23 minutes but still added 17 points and four rebounds.  Annette Ilg was her typical whirling dervish of defense, fast break outlets and layups, finishing with 14 points and three steals in just 18 minutes of work.

Tritons’ Hearts Broken On Home Field By Toros

Post image for Tritons’ Hearts Broken On Home Field By Toros

by Jeff Creps on November 21, 2009

The Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros defeated the UCSD Tritons on Friday night to take the NCAA Division II Western Regional title in women’s soccer.  The game, which was tied 2-2 after regulation, ended in a 4-1 penalty kick shootout.  It was a physical game that was played in a thick layer of fog that covered the field the entire night.

CSUDH Forward Brooke Thompson led the way for the Toros with one goal during regulation, adding another during penalty kicks.

The close finish was no surprise from either side.  Coming into Friday night’s game the all-time series was tied 16-16-4.

“It always seems to be a [close game],” said Coach Joe Flanagan after the game.  “A team may go up and look good early, and then the other team comes back.  These two teams are like a heavy weight match.”

The Tritons dominated time of possession in the first half, but neither team was able to score.  It was the physical play of the Toros that kept the score even through the first 45 minutes of play.

UCSD came out noticeably flat in the second half, and the Toros took advantage.  CSUDH scored twice in the first five minutes of the period (48’, 50’), once off a free kick and then off of a sloppy play from UCSD that ended up an own goal.

“Unfortunately that little four-minute spell to start the second half put us behind.” UCSD Coach Brian McManus said.

Wild Comeback Lifts Tritons In Regionals

May 15, 2009

ShareSo far in this postseason, the UCSD Tritons have had the magic touch.  When they have needed a big play, they’ve made it.  When they’ve needed a big hit, someone has stepped up and delivered.  And when a pitcher falters, the offense is there to pick him up and carry the team to victory.  Thursday [...]

Tritons Cherry-Pick Win Over CSUDH

May 8, 2009

SharePALM SPRINGS, CA–It’s not often, on a 103-degree day without a cloud in the sky, that you see a baseball game delayed, but that’s what happened here Thursday at Palm Springs Stadium.  A pair of cherry-picker cranes that were in center field (presumably, to hang or drop an advertising banner) broke down prior to the [...]
