In the middle of the locker room, sitting on a simple 6-foot card table, was a regular every-day cardboard box. Standing perhaps a first-down away was backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst holding a bouncy ball, about half the size of a basketball.

The idea was to bounce the ball on the carpeted floor and have it land in the box. After a shot or two went awry, Whitehurst gave way to a teammate…and so on, until a crowd of a dozen or so had gathered around the jeer the contestants every time they missed.

In another corner of the spacious oasis…a couple of cornerbacks peered into their cell phones, texting or checking messages or perhaps even playing some hand-held video game — no tweets, mind you, because those are illegal on the premises of the Chargers’ practice facility.

Across the way, Antonio Gates was talking about visiting his kids and the rest of his family this weekend. Kevin Burnett said he was looking forward to getting as far away from football as possible.

While San Diego turns away, their baseball club is just now showing some stick, some speed, a collection of interesting arms and an identity all their own.
