Padres Keep It Rolling

Post image for Padres Keep It Rolling

by Craig on September 13, 2009

The Padres are giving Craig and Chris plenty to talk about.  Can the Padres carry their momentum into 2010, or is this late run a flash in the pan?  And has this been Kevin Towers’ best year as GM?

Peaved! An Era Comes To An End

by Chris Ello on August 1, 2009

Do you remember where you were the last time the San Diego Padres played a significant baseball game?

From His First Start, Peavy Was Something Special

From The Moment Of His First Start, Peavy Was Special

I know where Jake Peavy was — right there on the mound with the ball in his hand. It was Oct. 1, 2007 (only 22 months ago, though now it seems like at least five years), and the Padres were playing the Colorado Rockies in a one-game playoff to determine the National League’s final postseason participant.

Peavy didn’t have his best stuff that night. He departed in the 7th-inning with his side trailing, 6-5, but at least he hung in there long enough to give his team a chance to win.

The same can not be said about his departure this time.

Think about what the Friars were before Jake Peavy arrived on the scene. Padres? Hardly. They weren’t even good enough to be considered altar boys.

So, well on their way to a fourth-consecutive losing season and the franchise’s 14th last-place finish in 34 years of existence, the Padres Continue Reading →

Padres Remind Us Of Better Days

May 18, 2009

I was driving home late Saturday night, thoroughly not expecting to hear a Padres game on the radio, but there it was. The 14th inning of a 5-5 game between Cincinnati and San Diego. Here we go again. Last year I was there in person for the longest game in Padres history, the 22-inning loss to Colorado that served as the start of a very long end for the 2008 team. I was shocked to imagine that Buddy Black had been able to cobble together even six innings of scoreless relief from his beleaguered bullpen. Did Bell pitch all six? What’s going on around here?

Magical Strasburg Moment: No-Hits Air Force

May 9, 2009

ShareOn Oct. 7, 2001, over 60,000 fans packed into Qualcomm Stadium for an otherwise meaningless baseball game between the Padres and Colorado Rockies. The fans were there to see only one thing: to see if Tony Gwynn — Mr. Padre — could deliver just one more hit. He had already delivered 3,141 of them in his glorious [...]

Seems Like Old Times

May 6, 2009

Something felt comfortably familiar about last night’s game at Petco Park between the Rockies and Padres. Sure, the crowd was small, and neither team is likely for a playoff spot, there are only a couple of players you come out to see on the Pads…wait, that’s it! (cue harp music for memory flashback).

When I came to San Diego to stay in 1990, the Padres had a couple of decent teams and a few terrible ones. But going to the Murph to watch a game was a pretty fun experience. The sightlines in the upper deck were pretty good for a $7 ticket, and with so few people there on most nights you could find a better seat later if you wanted. The fans who were there were real, true fans of the team, and in all of San Diego there were about 12,000 of them. The rest would come from time to time when there was a giveaway.
