For Hoke, The Real Work Starts Now

Post image for For Hoke, The Real Work Starts Now

Brady Hoke’s first year as SDSU football coach is about to come to an end, and I’m in a mood to take stock.  ”Hoke’s rules” have been in place for a full season, his teams have played harder and at times much better than previous editions, but the last few weeks have put a dent in what was a mostly optimistic first campaign.  So what’s changed?

From the outside looking in, little has changed in Hoke’s first season.  A team that won four games two years ago and two games last year will either win four or five games this season.  The top teams in the Mountain West conference blew out the Aztecs, again.  SDSU beat Colorado State and New Mexico, two teams that are a combined 1-13 in conference (New Mexico’s lone conference win was over, of course, Colorado State).  Attendance and outside interest are maybe a half-tick higher than last year, which isn’t saying much.

Of course, if you’re going to judge Brady Hoke from the outside looking in, then you are doing both him and yourself a disservice.  To me, 2009 was a year of undoing and redoing for the Aztecs football program.

Hey Padres! Do NOT deal Adrian!

Post image for Hey Padres! Do NOT deal Adrian!

So the San Diego Padres send out a ticket brochure to former season ticket holders for 2010 — and there isn’t a single photo anywhere in there of All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. First thought: Does that mean that the Padres plan on not having Adrian Gonzalez on their ballclub next season?

Seems like a fair question. After all, why in the world would the Padres try to sell tickets without so much as a mention of the one true superstar they have to sell? Would the ‘89 Padres have put out a season ticket brochure without a photo of Tony Gwynn? Five years ago, would the Friars have left out Trevor Hoffman? Or Jake Peavy?

What in the world of weak-thinking marketing strategies is going on here?

ShareTo finish the year stronger, the Aztecs must have stronger finishes to their games.  That was the message imparted by Brady Hoke to his San Diego State football team after reviewing the tape of Saturday night’s 35-19 win over Southern Utah.  Hoke spoke about it to the media in his Tuesday press conference:

The Aztecs [...]

A Scare And A Happy Ending

May 21, 2009

ShareFORT WORTH, TX—When Stephen Strasburg takes the mound, opposing hitters quiver in fear.  But when Stephen Strasburg left the mound with an apparent injury two outs into the 8th inning of Wednesday’s MWC Tournament game against New Mexico, it was the Aztec faithful who had their hearts in their throats.  In the end, though, the [...]
