Gwynn Opening Season With Changes

Post image for Gwynn Opening Season With Changes

by Craig on February 12, 2010

The college baseball season is one week away from getting started, with San Diego State hosting Oklahoma and Indiana coming to play USD on February 19th.  On Tuesday, Tony Gwynn and Rich Hill joined 619 Sports’ Craig Elsten on the stage for the Hall of Champions’ Sports at Lunch banquet.

Gwynn announced major changes for a pair of the Aztecs’ biggest stars.  Junior closer Addison Reed, an All-American who saved 21 games in 21 chances last season, will be converted to a starting pitcher in 2010.  Brandon Meredith, the slugging freshman first baseman, will be switched far up the defensive spectrum to center field.

Meanwhile, Rich Hill is just hoping to keep what looks like a loaded Toreros team healthy.  With a rotation that will include A.J. Griffin (also making the switch from closer to starter), Kyle Blair and Sammy Solis, USD will have a full complement of arms every weekend.

Hey Padres! Do NOT deal Adrian!

Post image for Hey Padres! Do NOT deal Adrian!

by Chris Ello on October 30, 2009

So the San Diego Padres send out a ticket brochure to former season ticket holders for 2010 — and there isn’t a single photo anywhere in there of All-Star first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. First thought: Does that mean that the Padres plan on not having Adrian Gonzalez on their ballclub next season?

Seems like a fair question. After all, why in the world would the Padres try to sell tickets without so much as a mention of the one true superstar they have to sell? Would the ‘89 Padres have put out a season ticket brochure without a photo of Tony Gwynn? Five years ago, would the Friars have left out Trevor Hoffman? Or Jake Peavy?

What in the world of weak-thinking marketing strategies is going on here?

Vote For Adrian — Or Else!!

June 29, 2009

ShareBefore we get started, a couple of quick questions: Do you do everything people tell you to do? Do you do everything you’re supposed to do?
Let’s say you’re a staunch Democrat. Everyone in your circle of friends is a Democrat. Your entire family. You’ve voted Democrat in every election your entire life. And then along comes [...]

Another Long Day At Petco Park

June 8, 2009

ShareMy Sunday evening was planned out perfectly. Having watched all I needed to of the Padres game (they were losing to Arizona 6-1 in the 8th), I went to the gym and set the DVR to start taping the NBA Finals. I would get home, walk the pug, and then watch the game skimming through [...]

After Draft, Will Things Look “Up”?

June 7, 2009

ShareSaw the movie, “Up” the other night. Cute. Funny. You’ll probably like it. But I couldn’t help but wonder how the amazing folks at Pixar came up with the idea. Were they all sitting around the office one day when somebody said, “Hey, I have a thought!”?
“Let’s do something about an old fart who ties a [...]

Tritons Cherry-Pick Win Over CSUDH

May 8, 2009

SharePALM SPRINGS, CA–It’s not often, on a 103-degree day without a cloud in the sky, that you see a baseball game delayed, but that’s what happened here Thursday at Palm Springs Stadium.  A pair of cherry-picker cranes that were in center field (presumably, to hang or drop an advertising banner) broke down prior to the [...]

Triton Talk

April 28, 2009

ShareEach week I travel back to my alma mater in La Jolla and check on on the week’s activity in UC San Diego Athletics, a little show we like to call Triton Talk.  This week’s show focuses on baseball and softball.  Head Coach Dan O’Brien’s baseball team is 30-11 and hoping to clinch their first-ever [...]
