The San Diego Section’s all-time rushing leader will be heading to the Bay Area to play football.  Escondido’s Ricky Seale signed his letter of intent to attend Stanford University in the fall, and to play for coach Jim Harbaugh on the football team.  Seale’s signing, which took place today at the Escondido High School Learning Center, capped months of speculation as to where Seale would land.

“Thank God, it’s finally all over,” said Seale after putting ink to paper.

Seale was one of four Escondido athletes signing letters of intent on Wednesday, a banner day for the North County school.  Tim Zier signed a baseball scholarship with SDSU, while Joe Morton signed to play basketball at Wyoming, and Mala Lemay accepted a softball scholarship from Hawaii.

How close did the Aztecs come to landing Seale?

“It was a 50-50 deal all the way,” said Seale, “but Stanford was always my first choice.”

The CIF semifinals are taking place on Friday, and 619 Sports will be covering games in four divisions.  In Division I, the most highly anticipated game pits the county’s top two running backs against one another, with Ricky Seale and Escondido taking on Tony Jefferson and Eastlake.

619 Sports’ Dave Palet spoke with Eastlake head coach John McFadden this week:

Q: You’re now in your 10th season at Eastlake High School; this being
the 4th straight time you’ve coached Eastlake’s Football team to the
semi-finals.  Having lost three straight years, how important is this win for
you, and the players you coach?

A: “The outside world makes it more important than it really is.  Every game
is important, but for me it’s about the kids getting a chance to experience
this part of the playoffs.  We’ve been there before and we would like to
take the next step and see what that experience feels like.”

Q: Going back to last year’s semi-final game against Helix High School,
Eastlake went for the two-point conversion and lost as time expired.  As a
coach that’s used to winning, do you think more about the wins or the
losses?

A: “It’s not even close, all you remember are the losses.  You remember the
great kids, but when you’re used to winning, the wins are more of a relief;
when you lose it can be devastating.  When you lose, you remember every little
detail. When you win, it’s more of a fog.  The losses definitely kill you.” Continue Reading →

Aztecs Steal Chargers Weekend Thunder

October 27, 2009

ShareIt was a great weekend for San Diego’s football team.
Nice to go on the road and get a big victory. Good to see the quarterback firing the ball all over the field with a bunch of touchdowns and no interceptions. The big-play wide receiver made some big plays and also scored. Sure the star running [...]

Monday Proves Bolts Are For Real

October 22, 2009

ShareWhere to start?
Well, let’s at least start with this: there are 11 games left in the San Diego Chargers’ 2009 season, and thank God you fans aren’t running the show.
If you were, we know what you would do. Fire Norv Turner. Kick A.J. Smith’s egotistical behind to the curb. Trade that loud-mouth ex-star Shawne Merriman [...]

Close But No Cigar Still Stinks

October 18, 2009

ShareThe question was fired at Brady Hoke the same way so many questions have been fired at so many San Diego State football coaches after so many tough losses over the last so many years.
“Does it feel better to lose a close game,” came the query following the Aztecs’ 38-28 loss to BYU Saturday evening [...]

J.T. Rogan: Rocky Road

September 15, 2009

Talent was not the deciding factor in this game. It seemed as if Northern Colorado wanted to win more than we did. That might be most evidenced in the fact that they showered their coach with a cooler full of Gatorade after the game. The New York Giants started the postgame tradition by dousing head coach Bill Parcells after winning a Super Bowl, and Northern Colorado emulated this celebration after defeating us.
