Sockers Play For The Title Tonight

Post image for Sockers Play For The Title Tonight

Chiky Luna’s goal with :19 left in the fourth quarter gave the San Diego Sockers a wild 6-5 victory over the Mexico City Sidekicks, sending the Sockers through to the final of the PASL-Pro North American Championship.  The Sockers will play La Raza de Guadalajara tonight at 6:15pm in Del Mar, bidding for the 11th indoor soccer title in the history of the revived franchise.  (watch a full-game replay on demand from 619 Sports by clicking here)

A game filled with tension, drama, nerves and argument came down to the Sockers’ long-standing ability to convert goals off of free kicks and set pieces.  Paul Wright netted a free kick goal from the top of the penalty box early in the fourth quarter to put the Sockers ahead 5-4, and then acted as a decoy for the final goal, as Aaron Susi veered in to thread a pass to Luna in the left slot for the game winner.

“It was actually designed for Susi to set up Paul, but when Mexico City lined up (their defense), we saw they were leaving me wide open,” said Luna, “Susi and I just looked at each other, and I knew he was coming to me right away.”

Sockers Start Slow, Finish Strong vs. Cougars

Post image for Sockers Start Slow, Finish Strong vs. Cougars

by Craig on November 21, 2009

DEL MAR–The San Diego Sockers didn’t start well last night, on or off the field.  A missing piece of scoreboard equipment led to a near 45-minute delay to the start of Friday night’s game against the defending PASL champion California Cougars.  Then, stymied by Cougars’ goalie Jesus Molina, the Sockers found themselves trailing 4-1 heading into the fourth quarter.

Suddenly, the Sockers stepped up their intensity and mounted a furious comeback.  Goals by Anthony Medina and Aaron Susi cut the lead to one with 13:26 to play.  Then, it was time for Kraig Chiles to go from zero to hero.  The former SDSU striker netted the equalizer with 2:37 to go in the fourth, then finished off a rebound from Paul Wright with 7:26 to play in overtime, giving the Sockers (4-0, 3-0 PASL) a hard-earned 5-4 win over California (0-1, 0-1) in front of approximately 1,500 fans at the Del Mar Arena.

Chiles talked to 619 Sports about the game-winning goal:

Vincent Jackson Grows Up — Way Up

November 10, 2009
Thumbnail image for Vincent Jackson Grows Up — Way Up

ShareVincent Jackson has always had a lot of little boy in him. The problem is that he hasn’t always had enough grown man.
Ever polite, friendly and outgoing — but immature to a fault — the Chargers young wide receiver spent his first four seasons in the NFL playing around and making a lot of silly [...]

The Kids Are All Right!!

August 28, 2009

ShareYou don’t often win a baseball game despite allowing a nine-run inning. But then again, you don’t often see the opposing second baseman high-five the guy who just hit a dramatic, late-inning, game-tying two-run homer, either.
Such is the grit, guts and determination of Chula Vista’s Park View Little League baseball team, which is now just [...]

Sonoma Comeback Sets Up One-Game Season

May 17, 2009

ShareThree outs from claiming their first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II College World Series, UCSD was instead pushed into a one-game winner-take-all matchup for the NCAA West Regional.  Sonoma State’s Kris Haycock launched a two-run homer off Tritons’ closer Guido Knudsen in the top of the 9th, lifting the Seawolves to a 4-3 victory [...]

Wild Comeback Lifts Tritons In Regionals

May 15, 2009

ShareSo far in this postseason, the UCSD Tritons have had the magic touch.  When they have needed a big play, they’ve made it.  When they’ve needed a big hit, someone has stepped up and delivered.  And when a pitcher falters, the offense is there to pick him up and carry the team to victory.  Thursday [...]

Bell Needs Another Bell

May 10, 2009

ShareAs it turns out, it wasn’t losing Trevor Hoffman that wounded the Padres bullpen this year.  It was losing Heath Bell that really hurt.
See, Hoffman was replaced by…Heath Bell.  And Bell has been perfect as closer.  He’s even got a larger-than-life, brash and bold persona, for good and ill.  Bell is fine as closer.  But [...]

The Weekend That Was: The WBC

March 23, 2009

Share Was the WBC low on your sports priority list this weekend?  Apparently it was for Team USA as well.  Playing with a deliberately short-handed roster, a pitching staff which we know isn’t anywhere near the best this country can offer, and a manager who last made a meaningful contribution to the game back in 1986, [...]
