DEL MAR–Put two quality sides against one another in arena soccer and the product is compelling.  Put six of the top teams in North America all in one tournament, and the results are sure to thrill and surprise.

Thursday in the quarterfinals of the PASL-Pro North American Championships, the defending champion California Cougars were put to the test before eventually prevailing over Calgary United 8-7 in overtime, on player/coach Antonio Sutton’s golden goal with 5:48 remaining in sudden death.  The Cougars rallied from a three-goal fourth quarter deficit, using six attackers for the final nineteen minutes (including OT).

In the second quarterfinal, the PASL-Pro Eastern Division champion Cincinnati Express were upset by the Mexico City Sidekicks 6-5, on Adhemir Olvera’s goal with :20 remaining in the fourth.  Cincinnati had also used a 6th attacker to rally from a three-goal deficit, the Express trailing by three with only 3:30 remaining.

The Sidekicks advance to face the top-seeded San Diego Sockers in tonight’s second semifinal, to be played at 7:30pm and broadcast exclusively on 619Sports.Net.  The 5pm semifinal (also on 619Sports.Net) will pit the Cougars against La Raza de Guadalajara from Liga Mexicana de Futbol Rapido. Aaron Susi’s twisting free kick, bent around a two-man wall and into the upper-right corner of the net in sudden death overtime, lifted the Sockers (9-0, 8-0 PASL-Pro) to a thrilling 8-7 win over the Cougars.  Susi’s second goal of the game, coming with 13:06 to play in OT, capped a wild game that saw five ties and five lead changes.

Susi described the golden goal, coming off a free kick from the left wing outside the penalty area:

The glorious ending for San Diego helped erase the frustration of surrendering a two-goal lead with three minutes remaining in the fourth period.  The Cougars (4-2) pulled their goalie for a 6th attacker with 4:35 to play and mounted a furious rally, capped by Vicente Figueroa’s brilliant free kick goal with just three seconds left on the clock.
