On a drizzling night at Qualcomm, instead of a 300-pound defensive lineman, the Arizona Wildcats found it harder to contain the 175-pound kicker Alex Henery.
Their junior kicker, who set a new Holiday Bowl record with four converted field goals, led the Nebraska Cornhuskers along with Zac Lee in the 33-0 win.
These two teams had previously met in the 1998 Holiday Bowl. In that contest Arizona beat Nebraska 23-20 after a late interception of Eric Couch by then-Wildcat Chris McAllister.
But in this Holiday Bowl, it would be the Husker defense that would be too much to handle.
The second ranked Husker defense was dominant from the opening snap. On the Wildcats first possession, a poor throw by QB Nick Foles led to an interception by Husker safety Matt O’Hanlon. Nebraska would never look back.
Although he may never be confused with Nebraska legend Eric Crouch, Lee’s effort in the run game helped the Huskers control the clock; dominating time of possession by nearly 17 minutes in the game.
