Aztecs Football Goes Quietly at Utah

The sign on the door of the luxury box suite at Rice-Eccles Stadium said: “San Diego State Athletic Director.” Inside the luxury box, of course, there was no Athletic Director.

Though no doubt still embarrassed by the actions which led to his resignation earlier in the week, Jeff Schemmel probably felt fortunate he didn’t have to be in Salt Lake City on Saturday afternoon.

The SDSU football team, for the first time this season, brought back the ugly memories of recent years — a no-show like their former A.D. in a 38-7 loss to the Utah Utes.

Maybe it was to be expected.

The week kicked off with Brady Hoke’s young, improving team having its heart ripped out by Wyoming, the Cowboys scoring 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to all but end SDSU’s bowl hopes a week ago Saturday at Qualcomm, 30-27.

Then the Aztecs tried to recover from that drop-kick to the gut while the University’s Athletic Department was being shamed by the actions of Schemmel, who admitted to using the school’s funds to bankroll trips around the country for trysts with his mistress.

Schemmel resigned his post on Thursday. Less than 48 hours later, the Aztecs resigned officially from post-season play. Like Schemmel, they disappeared quietly.

No A.D.? No Problem for SDSU Men

Post image for No A.D.? No Problem for SDSU Men

To say the least, it was a rather tumultuous day on Montezuma Mesa. The evening provided a nice respite from the craziness.

Playing at Viejas Arena, across the street from where it was announced earlier Thursday that Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel had resigned his post after he was caught using University money to help pay for weekend trysts with a mistress, the SDSU men’s basketball team pulled away from Santa Clara for an easy 86-53 victory.

San Diego State led by a comfortable 14 points early in the second half before embarking on an 18-0 run that turned the game into a blowout. Twice the Aztecs led by 40 in improving to 2-1 on the season.

On most nights, the story of this victory would be the bounce-back effort of a young, athletic Aztec team which just three nights earlier had been blown out 80-58 at St. Mary’s, which like Santa Clara plays in the West Coast Conference.

The Aztecs, no-shows Monday night in Moraga, definitely came to play. But the underlying focus of the evening was on who wasn’t there.

SDSU Coach Steve Fisher, no stranger to scandal while at the University of Michigan, addressed the Schemmel situation only briefly following the game.

“Jeff Schemmel is a good friend, he and (Schemmel’s wife) Lori are both good friends,” said Fisher. “I feel very badly. They’ve done a lot as a team Continue Reading →
