Finishing their regular seasons in style on Saturday, the Aztec men eased past Air Force in Colorado Springs, 61-42, as Kawhi Leonard (right) and Malcolm Thomas each scored 18 points. Beth Burns’ women’s team blew out Air Force, 87-52, at Viejas Arena with outgoing stars Quenese Davis (23 pts.) and Jene Morris (17 pts.) both frolicking after their Senior Day celebrations.
Now the question is whether or not either team (or both) can reach the main stage for March Madness, the NCAA Tournament.
Steve Fisher’s men’s team figures to have the better opportunity, though the Aztecs came within two points of winning the MWC Postseason Tournament last season and were snubbed despite having the nation’s highest RPI among non-qualifying tournament teams.
