STOCKTON–The San Diego Sockers will have to wait until at least Friday to clinch the PASL-Pro Western Division, and the one team they didn’t want to let into the playoffs might now be heading to Del Mar.

In the first overtime shootout in PASL-Pro history, the California Cougars (11-4) edged the Sockers 7-6, in front of a crowd of over 1,000 at Stockton Arena.  A spirited comeback that saw San Diego rally from 5-1 and 6-5 deficits came up empty, as the Sockers were stopped on two of their three tries in the shootout by Cougars’ keeper Jesus Molina.

The game was broadcast live exclusively on 619Sports.Net and an archived version of the game can be found here.

Kraig Chiles (pictured) scored four goals for San Diego, giving him 30 for the season, and Paul Wright’s goal off a free kick from the top of the box with 1:25 to play in regulation tied the game 6-6.  Anthony Medina also scored for the Sockers (11-2), who generated multiple chances and hit the post three times in the fifteen minute OT period but could not find the back of the net.

“We knew they were going to come after us hard, and they did,” said Medina, “Once we came back from 5-1 down I thought we were going to pull out the win for sure.” Continue Reading →

DEL MAR—For the second time this season, the San Diego Sockers met the defending PASL-Pro champion California Cougars at the Del Mar Arena.  For the second time, the game was a back-and-forth thriller that could not be decided in 60 minutes.

And, for the second time, the Sockers were the ones sending their fans home happy in overtime.

Aaron Susi’s twisting free kick, bent around a two-man wall and into the upper-right corner of the net in sudden death overtime, lifted the Sockers (9-0, 8-0 PASL-Pro) to a thrilling 8-7 win over the Cougars.  Susi’s second goal of the game, coming with 13:06 to play in OT, capped a wild game that saw five ties and five lead changes.

Susi described the golden goal, coming off a free kick from the left wing outside the penalty area:

The glorious ending for San Diego helped erase the frustration of surrendering a two-goal lead with three minutes remaining in the fourth period.  The Cougars (4-2) pulled their goalie for a 6th attacker with 4:35 to play and mounted a furious rally, capped by Vicente Figueroa’s brilliant free kick goal with just three seconds left on the clock. ShareDEL MAR–The San Diego Sockers didn’t start well last night, on or off the field.  A missing piece of scoreboard equipment led to a near 45-minute delay to the start of Friday night’s game against the defending PASL champion California Cougars.  Then, stymied by Cougars’ goalie Jesus Molina, the Sockers found themselves trailing 4-1 heading [...]
