Still the Grandaddy Of Them All

Post image for Still the Grandaddy Of Them All

by Craig on January 2, 2010

A rare opportunity presented itself on New Year’s Day, as a pair of Rose Bowl tickets intended for an Ohio State bigwig matriculated their way into the hands of my brother, Joel.  Over the course of what turned out to be a 15-hour day, I made the daytrip from San Diego to Pasadena and back to watch Ohio State battle Oregon in the Arroyo Seco.

Regardless of what Nick Canepa might think, the bloom has in no way come off this Rose.  The pageantry, simplicity, and beauty of the Rose Bowl game was obvious to this observer.  The presentation is not overly cluttered or ostentatious.  The fans care very much about the outcome of the game, BCS be damned.  And frankly, this traditional Pac-10 vs. Big-10 matchup would have had no role in the national championship discussion regardless of format.

Instead, there was just a great venue, two great groups of fans, and one terrific game.

Enjoy my photo gallery of the 2010 Rose Bowl after the jump! Continue Reading →

Parade Coming?

Post image for Parade Coming?

by Chris Ello on December 26, 2009

Editor’s Note: With the Chargers now set for a realistic run to the Super Bowl, we take a look back at an article I wrote this past June — nearly three months before the Bolts’ 50th-Anniversary season ever got underway. The original headline was: “When Do We Get Our Parade?”…The way the Chargers are currently playing, the answer may be: “soon.”

Dear Chargers,

I saw where they had another parade the other day in downtown Pittsburgh. Seems as though they have one every six months or so. Steelers win the Super Bowl: parade. Penguins win the Stanley Cup: parade.

Parades and Perogies. Do you realize that they’ve had 12 parades in Pittsburgh — of all places — in the last 35 years? Six for the Steelers, three for the Penguins, and even two for the Pirates. Pitt football — led by Heisman winner Tony Dorsett — won a National Championship in 1976.

Unbelievable.

I see where they’re getting ready for another parade in Los Angeles as well. Lakers win another NBA title, time to line the smoggy streets. Seventh one they’ve had this decade. Seven!

Not making me too happy.

In fact, it seems, they have parades everywhere. Except for here in San Diego.

Philadelphia, the losingest city there ever was, just had a parade (last October). The folks there would tell you they never win anything in Continue Reading →

You Gotta Like Siler

Cash in now if you had Brandon Siler in the “Most Unlikely Guy To Be A Charger Hero In 2009″ pool. Almost forgotten as a 7th-round pick in the 2007 NFL draft, Siler (No. 59) has risen from fourth-string inside linebacker to become a big-time force on the Bolts’ defense. If you’re not sure, just ask the Cowboys.

I Say TCU Is No. 1

November 8, 2009
Thumbnail image for I Say TCU Is No. 1

ShareDamn right, I said it. And I can say it because I saw it.
The San Diego State Aztecs lost Saturday afternoon to the No. 1 team in the country. You think I care what the polls say? You think it bothers me that every so-called expert in the nation would disagree with me?
To them, and [...]

How About Some Love For Norv?

October 15, 2009

ShareThe first time I ever saw Norval Eugene Turner, I was about 10-years old and he was playing football for a team from Eugene. I never met him, but he was there. And, though there’s no way I could possibly remember it, I’m sure I saw him.

It was the fall of 1972, and my dad [...]

The Aztecs Are Finally No. 1!!

June 9, 2009

ShareI guess all of us Aztecs fans have a similar story. We went to school there, we lived and died with our sports teams while we were there, and we still dream — even to this day — that somehow, someway, against all odds, San Diego State will finally wind up on top.
In anything.
Of course, a national [...]
