Norv: No More O-Line Gambles

Post image for Norv: No More O-Line Gambles

by Craig on September 16, 2009

Chargers head coach Norv Turner dressed only seven offensive linemen on Monday night and the gamble almost backfired.  Injuries to Nick Hardwick and Louis Vasquez left the Chargers with only five healthy bodies on the line.  Turner won’t make that mistake again:

(due to NFL rules we had to take down Turner’s audio after 24 hours.  The transcript of his comments is below)

Norv Turner

“Obviously, our first and most pressing need is to make sure—and that’s why the evaluation of the injuries is so important—but to make sure we dress eight linemen next weekend and we’re sound there.  You play the odds, and very rarely do you have two linemen injured in the game.  I think maybe once or twice in my coaching career I’ve gone with seven linemen, because you know that can happen.  But obviously, we had needs defensively, so we went with seven.  I was telling some of the guys, we went with seven (linemen) all three years I was in Dallas, and we never, ever got down where we had less than six.  We do it one time here, and we’re down to five.  Gates-ey was telling me a story that when Marcus McNeill was down on the ground with a twisted ankle-and obviously he got up and kept playing-Gates was saying to him, “c’mon, we’ve had enough of this around here already, someone’s got to play now!”  And he said Marcus just smiled and kept playing, but under normal circumstances he would have come out.”

Norv Turner: Not Much To Say On Injuries

Post image for Norv Turner: Not Much To Say On Injuries

by Craig on September 15, 2009

After a physical game in Oakland, Chargers head coach Norv Turner was playing coy during his Tuesday press conference about a series of injuries that ripped through his squad.

(due to NFL rules we had to take down Turner’s audio after24 hours.  Here is the transcript of what he said:)

“From an injury standpoint, you saw the guys who came out of the game.  Nick Hardwick has a sprained ankle, and he’ll be evaluated every day.  I would not expect him to practice tomorrow.  LT has a sprained ankle, he’ll be evaluated every day.  I would not expect him to practice tomorrow.  Louis Vasquez has a sprained knee.  I would not expect him to practice tomorrow but again, it’s a day-to-day deal.  Jamal Williams, he’s had issues with his elbow, he sprained it a little bit.  Same deal, I would not expect him to practice tomorrow.  Luis Castillo, sprained elbow, and I’d put him in the same category.”

Turner did not elaborate further on any of the injuries, refused to say which lineman (Vasquez or Hardwick) was more likely to play on Sunday, and said only that he would be sure to suit up eight offensive lineman on Sunday against Baltimore.  The injuries Monday night left the Chargers without any further backup linemen.

When you started playing football, did you foresee yourself having a dozen years of a career in the trenches in the National Football League, where you’re getting hit by three or four trucks on a single play?

“No, not at all. I was just trying to get through my first year, playing with Junior Seau and Rodney Harrison and those guys, I’m like, wow! I’ve really got to pick it up. You know, they say the average lifespan of a player in the NFL is four years, so I’ve made it three times that long. I’ve been blessed.”

Antonio Gates Is Ready For The Raiders

“The second thing that goes through my mind is how the rivalry over time has made it possible for us to compete the way we (the Chargers and Raiders) compete now. There were guys who paved the way before us. And when I’m out there, I want to represent the San Diego Chargers, the present, future, and the past, that shows you, hey! When we play the Raiders, it’s a little bit personal. It’s one of those old-time rivalries where it’s almost like a homecoming, in a sense, where you have to win a game. That’s how I feel.”

How much confidence did you gain from the way you played against Atlanta?

“A gained a pretty good amount, coming out there playing fairly well with the older guys, especially alongside Hardwick and Dielman. It’s a great feeling, knowing I can come out there and compete, especially against a good opponent.”
