Chargers Remember The “Punk” Titans

Post image for Chargers Remember The “Punk” Titans

by Craig on December 22, 2009

Vince Young got flattened on a blindside.  Shawne Merriman got double-teamed, took a cheap-shot, and his knee has never been the same since.  In 2007, the Chargers and Titans played twice and both games were physical battles that came down to the final quarter.

Now, with the Titans clinging to fading hope for a miracle playoff push, and the Chargers one win away from securing the #2 seed in the AFC playoff bracket, these two teams meet again in Nashville.  Think anyone has forgotten what happened last time?

Shaun Phillips certainly hasn’t:

If you’re a nervous nellie Chargers fan, then Friday’s game should have you in cold sweats.  After all, it was a road game against a very physical team (the Raiders) that opened the 2009 campaign.  15 weeks later, there are still key Chargers who have yet to return to the field as a result of the injuries suffered in that game.  Nick Hardwick may finally get back to action on Friday…just in time to face the equally-if-not-more-physical Titans. by Chris Ello on December 12, 2009

With Nick Hardwick out for nearly the entire season, C Scott Mruczkowski has become a huge factor in the success of the Chargers’ offensive line. The man they call Mooch tells 619Sports.net that he indeed has improved as the season has gone along…but that the running game can still be better.

ShareOne play into their first defensive series against Miami, Shawne Merriman gimped off the field for the San Diego Chargers, not to be seen from again.  Combined with the previous losses of Jamal Williams, LaDainian Tomlinson and Nick Hardwick, the Chargers now had four All-Pros sidelined, two for each side of the football.  Any surprise [...]

Norv: No More O-Line Gambles

September 16, 2009

I was telling some of the guys, we went with seven (linemen) all three years I was in Dallas, and we never, ever got down where we had less than six. We do it one time here, and we’re down to five. Gates-ey was telling me a story that when Marcus McNeill was down on the ground with a twisted ankle-and obviously he got up and kept playing-Gates was saying to him, “c’mon, we’ve had enough of this around here already, someone’s got to play now!” And he said Marcus just smiled and kept playing, but under normal circumstances he would have come out.

September 15, 2009

“From an injury standpoint, you saw the guys who came out of the game. Nick Hardwick has a sprained ankle, and he’ll be evaluated every day. I would not expect him to practice tomorrow. LT has a sprained ankle, he’ll be evaluated every day. I would not expect him to practice tomorrow. Louis Vasquez has a sprained knee. I would not expect him to practice tomorrow but again, it’s a day-to-day deal. Jamal Williams, he’s had issues with his elbow, he sprained it a little bit. Same deal, I would not expect him to practice tomorrow. Luis Castillo, sprained elbow, and I’d put him in the same category.”

What happens on the sidelines after the O-line gives up a sack?

“It’s not getting mad at each other. It’s us working together as a team to improve things. Figuring out what’s going on, there’s a lot of problem solving on the sidelines. Sometimes it ties into running backs and quarterbacks, and we just all have to put our minds together and try and paint a picture of what really happened out there, and try to get it corrected for the next time.”
