FORT COLLINS, Colo. — This Saturday two of the greatest players ever to play women’s basketball for San Diego State, Jene Morris and Quenese Davis, will play in their final home game when the Aztecs host Air Force (Viejas Arena, 2 p.m.).

Having already helped to resurrect the SDSU program, carrying it from the depths of rock bottom when they both arrived to the rarefied air of an NCAA Tournament victory a year ago, Morris and Davis seem determined to provide a few more thrills before their sensational careers are over.

Against Colorado State here Wednesday night, Morris dominated the first half and Davis took over in the second as the Aztecs pulled away for a key 73-54 victory over the Rams at Moby Gym. SDSU (17-10 overall, 9-6 Mountain West Conference) all but clinched at least the No. 3-seed in next week’s MWC Postseason Tournament and the first-round tournament bye that comes along with it.

Plenty of work still needs to be done for Morris and Davis to lead the Aztecs back to the NCAA’s as a sometimes frustrating season full of surprising struggles has left SDSU needing to win the MWC Tourney in order to return to the Big Dance.

Nevertheless, it’s still quite possible that Morris and Davis will be able to resuscitate them one last time. Certainly the duo did just that on Wednesday as Morris scored 15 of her team’s 27 points in the first half, giving the Aztecs a three-point lead at intermission. In what truly was a one-player show, Continue Reading →

Aztec Women Click vs. USD

Post image for Aztec Women Click vs. USD

by Chris Ello on November 18, 2009

It’s a bit early, of course, to crown champions in college basketball. But in their home opener Tuesday night against cross-town rival USD, the San Diego State women’s basketball gave a glimpse of what they’re capable of.

Dominating the Toreros in every single category, the Aztecs rolled to a 79-52 victory that wasn’t nearly as close as the final margin indicated. SDSU led 45-19 at halftime and by as many as 35 points midway through the second half.

You want dominance on the inside? Check. SDSU out-rebounded USD 22-6 in the first half and finished with more offensive rebounds (21) than the Toreros had total rebounds (15).

Junior transfer Jessika Bradley used her 6-foot-3 frame to clear out plenty of space underneath and finished with a double-double (14 points, 10 rebounds).

You want excellence from he perimeter? Check. Led by guard Jerica Williams off the bench, the Aztecs connected on 7-of-10 3-point shots in the game. Williams was 3-for-3 from distance and guard Coco Davis hit on 2-for-2.

Looking for disruption on defense? Check. Senior guards Jene Morris and Quenese Davis harassed USD all night, each getting four steals, and helping to force 21 USD turnovers. SDSU scored 29 points off the the mistakes they constantly created.

Speed, athleticism, size, strength. Check. Check. Check. Check.
