DEL MAR–It took three tries and almost a full month, but the San Diego Sockers are PASL-Pro Western Division champions.  Paul Wright’s hat trick led a balanced offense that saw five players score twice or more, as the Sockers (12-3) overwhelmed Revolucion Tijuana 12-6 at the Del Mar Arena.

“We knew that we had to do this,” said Nate Heatherington, who scored twice in a five-goal San Diego fourth period, “We had to win this game.  It feels great to finally be in the playoffs.”

Kraig Chiles (31, 32), Dan Antoniuk (11, 12) and Sean Bowers (2, 3) added two goals apiece.  Chiles played nursing a sore hamstring and was limited in his runs, but was able to avoid further injury and get through the game healthy.

Jomel Torres had three hits and a HR for SDSU

Desperately in need of a solid performance to stabilize his pitching staff, SDSU head coach Tony Gwynn handed the baseball to a junior college transfer who entered the game with a 40.50 ERA.

Good move.

Steven Moranda, in his first collegiate start, worked 6 sharp innings and the Aztecs (1-4) offense sprang to life behind him for a convincing 14-1 victory over UC Riverside (4-1) at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

“I was just trying to focus on throwing strikes, and the defense played great behind me,” said Moranda, “it was a great team win.”
