One And Done: Aztecs Lose 62-59

Post image for One And Done: Aztecs Lose 62-59

by Craig on March 18, 2010

Melvin Goins drained a critical three-pointer, his fourth of the game, with :19 remaining as the 6th seeded Tennessee Volunteers edged 11th seeded San Diego State 62-59 at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island.  Goins finished with 15 points off the bench for the Vols, who advance to play 14th seeded Ohio in the 2nd round of the Midwest Regional.

The Aztecs delivered the effort and intensity needed to come out of Providence with their first-ever NCAA tournament win, but were unable to hit the big shots when needed down the stretch.  Kawhi Leonard airballed a contested three-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied the game.  Leonard finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

D.J. Gay had a solid game with 16 points, including three big free throws with :09 left to cut the lead to one.  The Aztecs were undone, though, with their shooting from beyond the arc.  SDSU was 3-for-18 (16.7%) from three, and was outscored by Tennessee 24-9 from distance.

Post image for 20 Wins For SDSU After Edging Utah

by Jeff Creps on February 21, 2010

Utah always seems to bring a well-balanced game against SDSU. Saturday night was no exception.

After narrowly escaping a late charge in a 70-68 January win over Utah, the Aztecs were again forced to provide late game heroics in Saturday’s 68-61 victory.

The Aztecs (20-7; 9-4 MWC) led 14-4 early on, but gave up a 14-4 Utah run that tied the game at 18. But SDSU  answered with to take a 36-26 lead into halftime on a run highlighted by a Kawhi Leonard dunk.  SDSU Head Coach Steve Fisher discussed how pleased he was with the way his team started the game, and how the Aztecs were able to whether the Utes storm ultimately winning them the game.

ShareSixteen missed free throws.  Sixteen turnovers on the Tritons’ home floor.
And a four-point loss to show for it.
The numbers were easy to add up on Thursday night, as UCSD shot themselves in the foot and still almost came back to beat a vulnerable opponent.  Instead, the Tritons (3-8, 2-6 CCAA) were left to ponder another [...]

ShareLA JOLLA–Coming into Thursday’s home game against Cal State Monterey Bay, UCSD head coach Charity Elliott had a goal.
