SDSU Women’s Hopes Fading Fast

Aztec Center Paris Johnson Grabbed Just 4 Rebounds -- None in the First half -- of Sunday's Loss at Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — If anything ever seemed like it was a sure thing, that was it. The San Diego State women’s basketball team, with four starters returning from last year’s 24-8 squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and the solid preseason favorites to win this year’s Mountain West Conference championship, would return to the postseason this coming March.

Then again, nothing’s ever a sure thing when it comes to San Diego State sports.  Really, we all should understand that by now.

What’s difficult to understand is what has happened to the lady Aztecs, who were squashed yet again here Sunday afternoon, 73-55, by the Utah Utes. In losing for the fourth time in five games, SDSU (15-10, 7-6 MWC) dropped into a fourth-place tie with Wyoming and New Mexico, three games behind the league-leading pace set by TCU and BYU with three games to play.

A return to the NCAA Tournament seems quite unlikely now, unless SDSU can rediscover its mojo in time for the MWC Postseason Tournament, which gets underway in 2 1/2 weeks. Almost assured of no better than a third- or fourth-place finish in the regular season standings, the Aztecs will have to win three (and maybe four) games in five days to claim an invite to the Big Dance.

“Once again our energy level just wasn’t where it needed to be for 40 full minutes, and that’s disappointing,” said Coach Beth Burns, who had helped cajole this team from also-ran status just three seasons ago to the level of championship contender and a No. 23-national ranking back in November. “We worked so hard the last couple of seasons to get the respect, but we haven’t worked hard enough to keep it.”

Effort — or lack thereof — is as good a place as any to start when trying to figure out SDSU’s many triviales during this trying, and frankly very discouraging season. Utah (16-9, 7-5) simply appeared to want Sunday’s game more, attacking the rim throughout in order to earn a lopsided 21-6 Continue Reading →

Aztec Women Turn Tables on Utah As Well

Post image for Aztec Women Turn Tables on Utah As Well

by Chris Ello on January 21, 2010

Always thought far too much is made about teams getting “payback” victories in the regular season over teams that beat them in playoff competition the previous season.

If the Chargers were to beat the Jets next November would that really be “payback” for the playoff loss last Sunday? Of course not.

Nevertheless, both the SDSU men’s and women’s basketball teams did pick up a small measure of redemption this week. The men defeated Utah, 70-68, in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night.

Then the women followed suit with a 51-42 win over the Utes on Wednesday night at Viejas Arena, led by preseason Mountain West Conference Player of the Year Jene Morris, who scored a game-high 22 points.

In bouncing back from its first conference defeat of the season Saturday at TCU, Beth Burns’ team (12-5, 4-1) moved back into sole possession of first place. Utah, now with a long road ahead to repeat as MWC champs fell to 10-7, 1-3.

“It’s always going to be a tough fight against Utah,” said Burns, whose team has split the last six meetings with the Utes following a stretch of 16-consecutive losses. “They play great defense, and they made things hard for us. But we found a way to get just enough done and protect our home court.”

SDSU, which has now won 13-straight conference games at home, plays at BYU on Saturday. The Cougars (12-4, 3-1) are just a half-game back of the Aztecs, as is TCU.

ShareIf you’ve followed Aztecs basketball, for a long while or just a little, you knew that the shot somehow was going to go in.
Never mind that Utah’s Carlon Brown was only a step past half court and double-teamed along the sideline when he let it go. Once again, the SDSU men’s basketball team had frittered away a seemingly [...]

Aztecs Football Goes Quietly at Utah

ShareThe sign on the door of the luxury box suite at Rice-Eccles Stadium said: “San Diego State Athletic Director.” Inside the luxury box, of course, there was no Athletic Director.
Though no doubt still embarrassed by the actions which led to his resignation earlier in the week, Jeff Schemmel probably felt fortunate he didn’t have to be [...]

Big Love Lost in SLC

February 12, 2009

ShareThree things that are hard for a visitor to get in Utah:

1) A good street taco
2) A Democratic majority
3) A win in basketball

The Aztecs tried to pull a win out of Salt Lake City, and so did the Lakers.  Both came up empty, and both did so by firing blanks late in the game [...]

Big Wednesday

February 11, 2009

ShareThis will be a good day to get outside and enjoy some of the furtive sunshine.  We won’t have much of it over the next week according to my intrepid weatherman Whitney Southwick, the giver of coats to cold women.  Before I chase a sunbeam, let’s talk about today’s big topics:

Tonight’s SDSU/Utah game is surprisingly [...]
