After capturing the Mountain West Conference tournament in dramatic fashion over UNLV, the San Diego State Aztecs had nothing to sweat about during Selection Sunday. The only questions were: seeding, location, and opponent.
The answers: #11, Providence, Rhode Island, and Tennessee.
It’s not a fan-friendly trip for Aztecs supporters, but the Volunteers present a challenging but beatable opponent.

RIVERSIDE–When the young San Diego State Aztecs baseball team plays a clean game defensively, they have had success. When they have dropped the ball, they have lost.
On Tuesday night at the Riverside Sports Complex, the Aztecs dropped the ball. Three early errors, two in a fateful 9-run 3rd inning, paved the way to a 10-4 defeat at the hands of the UC Riverside Highlanders.
The Aztecs are playing three players out of position on the infield due to the injury to shortstop/pitcher Ryan O’Sullivan. Mitch Blackburn’s steady glove at second base has been shifted to shortstop, with freshman third baseman Jordan Van Hoosier sliding to second, and freshman Corey Black stepping in at third base.
The switches caught up to SDSU (3-6) in the 3rd inning. Carrying a 1-0 lead into the frame (on Brandon Meredith’s first home run of the season), starter Craig Rasmussen (0-2) allowed a leadoff homer to UCR’s Brian McConkey. Brian Horst and Michael Hur followed with singles to bring up cleanup batter Robert Brantly. Continue Reading →

Against an over-matched Air Force team Tuesday night, the Aztecs (16-6, 5-3 MWC) held the Falcons scoreless for the game’s first 9:45, eventually running away with a 70-48 win in front of 6,126 at Viejas Arena. Malcolm Thomas contributed another double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Kawhi Leonard added a game-high 15 points and 7 boards.
Jimmer Fredette, the likely Mountain West Conference player of the year, battled through mononucleosis to score a game-high 33 points, leading BYU (20-1, 5-0 MWC) to a road victory. The Aztecs (14-6, 3-3) saw their 14-game home winning streak come to an end.
The Aztecs (12-3, 1-0 MWC) used a strong second half to bull their way past 15th ranked New Mexico 74-64 at Viejas Arena, on a night when junior forward Billy White was lost for at least the short term and perhaps much longer with a high ankle sprain.

Quenese Davis is simply called “Q” by her Aztec teammates in reference of course to her first name, though the initial could stand for her quiet demeanor both on and off the court. She spoke loudly with her play Friday night, leading SDSU to a 67-62 victory over Long Beach State at Viejas Arena.
