Kevin Towers was alternately emotional, thankful, and proud during his press conference today, after it was announced that he would be leaving the San Diego Padres.  KT ends a 14-year tenure as GM, the longest of any current GM.  Towers joked to start his prepared comments that after 47 years on Earth, he was fired for the first time:

He was at his most emotional toward the end of his opening comments, when he responded for the first time to the comments of CEO Jeff Moorad.  In the U-T on Saturday morning, Moorad called Towers a “gunslinger”, and in his press conference earlier in the afternoon, he talked about wanting more “focus” and “discipline” in the front office.  Towers, who once famously wore a sherriff’s outfit, complete with badge and stirrups, on the cover of the Padres’ media guide, was more than happy to wear the title of “gunslinger”:

I had the opportunity to write an article for the latest Padres Magazine (available during the current homestand at Petco Park) profiling the gains made by the draft class of 2008, particularly at the plate.  As part of that story I got to sit down with Padres’ VP of Scouting and Player Development Grady Fuson in his office downtown.  Now that the story is on the stands, I’ve been given permission by Padres Magazine to share my Fuson interview with you on 619sports.net.  While the conversation primarily focuses on those drafted in 2008 and how they are progressing in 2009, I also got to ask him some questions about the new signing deadline, the difference between developing high school and college kids, and some specific questions about the struggles of Allan Dykstra, questions that did not make it into the magazine article.

Interesting enough, I thought, to share with all you Padres and baseball fans who visit our site.  So, enjoy a conversation with Grady Fuson!
