In what has been a terrible year, the last week showed Padres fans at least a few hopeful glimpses for the future.  Can the 619 Sports guys see a light at the end of the tunnel?

While nobody on the Aztecs would say it, a three-game sweep of the Air Force Academy was just about a fait accompli.  SDSU’s pitching was just too good, the Falcons are just too green, and in the end Air Force managed just one earned run over their 27 innings on Montezuma Mesa.  The larger, underlying goal this weekend was for the Aztecs to resurrect their dormant offense, and Sunday brought signs of life in a 12-2 victory at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

While the top of the order continued to struggle, some key batters in the heart of the Aztecs’ lineup had breakout performances.  Erik Castro reversed a mini-slump with hits in his first three at-bats, including a solo homerun, his 8th of the year.  Brandon Meredith went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Mitch Blackburn continued his solid play with two hits, two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.  For Castro, the homer broke an extended drought and offered welcome relief to a junior slugger who was pressing a little at home plate.
