Aztecs Write Different Ending For Script in Utah

Post image for Aztecs Write Different Ending For Script in Utah

If you’ve followed Aztecs basketball, for a long while or just a little, you knew that the shot somehow was going to go in.

Never mind that Utah’s Carlon Brown was only a step past half court and double-teamed along the sideline when he let it go. Once again, the SDSU men’s basketball team had frittered away a seemingly insurmountable lead in the final minutes and — just like at Wyoming a couple of weeks ago — was doing everything it possibly could to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Plus, the Aztecs never win at Utah. Well, almost never. The Padres have been to the World Series the same number of times SDSU had left Salt Lake City with a win.

Brown’s shot was directly on line from 45-feet away, airborne just as the final horn sounded. But, for once, a miraculous comeback defeating the Aztecs wasn’t in the cards. The ball hit the heel of the rim and bounced away as SDSU hung on for a 70-68 victory.

The win was a big one for the Aztecs, who got a career-high 23 points and 13 rebounds from Malcolm Thomas, and improved to 14-5 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference. They rallied from nine points down at the half to beat TCU at home on Saturday and now have won two straight.

The winning streak comes on the heels of two disappointing losses on the road in which SDSU blew second-half leads, including the game in Laramie 10 days ago when they were up by 14 with just over four minutes left and lost by two.

A similar finish began to ominously develop over the final couple of minutes Tuesday night. Continue Reading →

Bring On The Mountain!!

by Chris Ello on December 31, 2009

The final score of the final game of the decade was San Diego State 89, Pomona-Pitzer 54.

To SDSU Coach Steve Fisher there have been more important scores. They include: San Diego State 63, Arizona 46…Brigham Young 81, Arizona State 68…New Mexico 86, California 78…UNLV 76, Louisville 71…Utah 60, Illinois 58.

“You look at some of the wins our conference has posted during this non-conference season,” said Fisher after his team completed its non-conference slate by pulling away from the Division 1-AA Sagehens in the second half Thursday and improving its record to 11-3.

“We all know how good of a conference we’re in. Maybe this will be the year that we get three and maybe four teams into the NCAA Tournament.”

Had that been the case a year ago, SDSU would have gone dancing. But it wasn’t, and with only two Mountain West teams chosen for the NCAA’s, the Aztecs had to settle for the NIT despite a school-record 26 victories.

Steve Fisher’s Aztecs are 9-3, and after winning on the road at Drake, 76-73, in overtime Tuesday night, have won six of their last seven games. But have they done enough during their non-conference season to put themselves in position for an at-large NCAA Tournament berth come March?

ShareEvery football coach talks about them. So do most pundits. Turnovers. Don’t hear quite as much about them in hoops.
Guess what? They decide games on the hardwood, too.
Trying to step out on the road for a marquee win, just seven days after hanging a Pac-10 win over Arizona on the mantle, San Diego State played [...]

Like an NFL quarterback with multiple weapons to throw to, Aztecs point guard D.J. Gay has quite a few options himself when he brings the ball up the court. He did an excellent job Saturday night of getting everybody involved as SDSU surprisingly ran away from Arizona, 63-46, to with its fifth-straight and improve to 8-2.

ShareTo say the least, it was a rather tumultuous day on Montezuma Mesa. The evening provided a nice respite from the craziness.
Playing at Viejas Arena, across the street from where it was announced earlier Thursday that Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel had resigned his post after he was caught using University money to help pay for weekend trysts with a [...]
