Crabb, Walks, Lead Aztecs To 7-0 Win

Post image for Crabb, Walks, Lead Aztecs To 7-0 Win

by Craig on March 6, 2010

On a night when San Diego’s clutch hitting was absent for six innings, the work of a precocious freshman on the mound led the Aztecs to victory.

Bryan Crabb (Coronado High) earned his first SDSU victory with seven innings of dominant, one-hit shutout baseball, and senior Kegan Sharp retired six straight to finish off a one-hitter of the Monmouth Hawks, 7-0 at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Friday night.

“He’s a keeper,” said head coach Tony Gwynn of his freshman right-hander, “he’s getting more confident each time he goes out there.”

Crabb walked three and struck out seven, with only one Hawk reaching third base (that on a two-out error by second baseman Mitch Blackburn).

“I felt good, just normal,” said Crabb after the game, “I didn’t walk as many guys and just felt more comfortable for some reason.”

Crabb had to be sharp, given the way the Aztecs were spinning their wheels offensively.  San Diego State left at least one runner on base in every inning and had fifteen stranded for the game, including the bases loaded twice.

Red And Black Comeback Leaves USD Blue

LINDA VISTA–Down 4-0 in the 7th, and having been shut out for their last 16 innings, the San Diego State Aztecs rediscovered their offense at just the right time.  The Aztecs scored four in the 7th and five in the 9th to cap a dramatic comeback at Cunningham Stadium, rallying past the 19th ranked USD Toreros for a 9-5 victory.

“I’m proud of our guys,” said head coach Tony Gwynn after the game, “they hung in there.  It would have been easy to hang their heads after punching out (11) times, but they didn’t, they hung in there, and got some big hits in the 7th and 9th innings.”

USD starter Kyle Blair had the Aztecs twisted in knots through six, striking out 10 batters, with six caught looking.  Even worse for SDSU, Blair walked four batters and hit another but none of those runners had come around to score.

The Toreros had built a 4-0 lead on a pair of run scoring hits by James Meador and some solid fundamental baseball.  The Aztecs turned the game, and weekend series, around with big hits and great relief pitching.
