At the BCS dinner table, there’s a fixed number of seats.
Sure, they’ll pull up a kids table, set up a high chair and a bib, and let other conferences look at what’s being served. They’ll even offer a taste if you’re really, really good. But a permanent spot on the guest list? Fat chance.
So, there’s only one recourse for the Mountain West Conference, and it’s a simple one: keep embarrassing the BCS at every opportunity.
Wednesday night at Qualcomm Stadium, the third-place team in the MWC outworked, out-schemed, out-coached, and outplayed their opponent from the “mighty”, BCS-worthy Pac-10. Spotting Cal a 14-0 lead, the University of Utah never panicked, scoring 27 unanswered points in a 37-27 victory at the Poinsettia Bowl.
That’s supposed to be an upset, at least in the minds of the BCS oligarchy. Thing is, it wasn’t. Utah’s flat-out better than Cal, and they’re not even close to the best that the Mountain West has to offer. Continue Reading →
