I Say TCU Is No. 1

Damn right, I said it. And I can say it because I saw it.

The San Diego State Aztecs lost Saturday afternoon to the No. 1 team in the country. You think I care what the polls say? You think it bothers me that every so-called expert in the nation would disagree with me?

To them, and to the rest of the college football world, I would say this: prove it. And you know what? They wouldn’t be able to do so.

The TCU Horned Frogs (now 9-0) are No. 1 because of everything they displayed at Qualcomm Stadium in dismantling Brady Hoke’s improved Aztecs, 55-12.

There isn’t one thing in the game of football that this team doesn’t do well — very well. There isn’t a single weakness. Except, of course, for the fact that in the B.S. world of the BCS it would be impossible for anyone to come out and admit that a little-old team from Mountain West could beat the “big boys” from the SEC or Big 12.

Hogwash.

Just last season, Alabama from the SEC spent nearly the entire season at No. 1, lost a hard-fought conference title game to Florida, and then was sent to the Sugar Bowl to play a Utah team that wasn’t supposed to be able share the same field with the Crimson Tide.

J.T. Rogan: Rocky Road

Post image for J.T. Rogan: Rocky Road

by Craig on September 15, 2009

This is the second installment in a series of weekly updates about USD Toreros football as related by myself, a six year veteran of the team, J.T. Rogan.

Rocky Road

In college football, the determinant of which team wins the game is rarely the amount of talent that is possessed by a team. However, there are instances where FBS schools play FCS schools or instances where FCS scholarship schools play non-scholarship schools and there is a significant disparity in talent. Last week, San Diego State University beat a Southern Utah team that has twenty two fewer scholarships. In 2007, our non-scholarship football team played the fully-funded, sixty three scholarship program of Northern Colorado. We beat Northern Colorado handily by a score of 49-16. No scholarships, no problem. Fast forward to last Saturday where we traveled to Greely, Colorado to face off with the University of Northern Colorado Bears. This was the same program that lost more games than it won year after year and continued to suffer more from poor discipline than from a lack of skill. Against them, they would likely let you back into any game and they would throw in the towel if defeat was imminent.

In the first half, our defense gave up a couple of big plays and our offense repeatedly moved the ball. The big plays that the defense gave up resulted in points while the offense’s ability to move the ball augmented field position without sending electricity to the light bulbs on the guest side of the scoreboard. We dug ourselves a 17-0 hole out of which we would have to work to start the second half. Continue Reading →

ShareBrady Hoke’s home opener could cut both ways.  He’s facing a Southern Utah team from the FCS in front of a big crowd on Sky Show night, but a loss would have SDSU fans fearing a “Long” season.  Chris & Craig let you know what to watch for on Saturday night:
