DEL MAR–So far, so good.

The San Diego Sockers’ quest to bring an 11th indoor championship to America’s Finest City is setting up about as well as could be imagined.  Saturday night at the Del Mar Arena, the Sockers dispatched the Edmonton Drillers 8-3, closing out a 13-3 regular season in the PASL-Pro and a perfect 8-0 home record.

“Now, it’s time for the second season,” said Paul Wright, the 40-year-old midfielder who did not score on Saturday, “this is why I came back, to win a championship, nothing else.”

With those goals in mind, Sockers’ coach Phil Salvagio rested forward Kraig Chiles on Saturday, protecting his leading scorer’s sore hamstring.  Braeden Cloutier started up front for San Diego and had his best game of the season, with two goals and an assist.

“It’s been a struggle for me getting healthy,” said Cloutier, “now that I’ve played three or four games in a row, I finally feel like my legs are underneath me.”

TIJUANA, MEXICO–Small field.  Small goal.  Crazy bounces off the plywood boards.

The San Diego Sockers know that when they travel to Estadio Furati in Tijuana, they are playing into the hands of the home team, Revolucion Tijuana.

Revolucion (2-4) outscored San Diego 4-1 in the fourth quarter to pull out a back-and-forth game, winning 9-6 to again delay the Sockers’ PASL-Pro Western Division title celebration.  The Sockers (11-3), losing two in a row for the first time all season, can still clinch a playoff berth and division title with a win in either of their final two games at home next weekend.

Anthony Medina (pictured) scored a hat trick for San Diego, with Dan Antoniuk, Paul Wright and Diego Rovira adding goals.  But, playing short-handed, the Sockers ran out of steam in the fourth.

“It’s so tough playing down here,” said Chiky Luna after the game, “they (Revolucion) know the field, they know the bounces, and they definitely play it to their advantage.”

The Sockers only got two shifts from the league’s leading scorer, Kraig Chiles, who experienced soreness in his hamstring and was rested as a precautionary measure for the remainder of the game.  Chiles failed to score for the first time all season. Continue Reading →

ShareDEL MAR–The San Diego Sockers didn’t start well last night, on or off the field.  A missing piece of scoreboard equipment led to a near 45-minute delay to the start of Friday night’s game against the defending PASL champion California Cougars.  Then, stymied by Cougars’ goalie Jesus Molina, the Sockers found themselves trailing 4-1 heading [...]
